Fourstardave: Get Smokin can go all the way at a price

Turf milers take the spotlight in the Fourstardave Handicap (G1) on Saturday, August 13! It is the 10th race of Saturday’s card at Saratoga Race Course, and it covers one mile on the grass course. In addition to a rich $500,000 purse, the race awards its winner an expenses-paid berth into the Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1) at Keeneland.

Some of the most exciting turf horses in recent years have won the Fourstardave. Those winners include the speedy mare Got Stormy (and her sire Get Stormy!), the Saratoga-loving Voodoo Song, Breeders’ Cup Mile winners Tourist and World Approval, and two-time Horse of the Year Wise Dan.

Fourstardave Handicap Field

This is the official field for the 2022 Fourstardave Handicap including post positions, trainers, jockeys, and morning lines:

  1. Casa Creed (Bill Mott/Luis Saez) - 5/2
  2. Front Run the Fed (Caio Caramori/Irad Ortiz, Jr.) - 10/1
  3. Regal Glory (Chad Brown/Jose Ortiz) - 6/5
  4. Masen (Chad Brown/Flavien Prat) - 2/1
  5. Get Smokin (Mark Casse/Javier Castellano) - 8/1

The morning line is no guarantee; if you bet the race at a track, you will not know the true odds until the gates spring open. However, there is a better way. If you want to make sure to lock in the best odds in the Fourstardave, your best bet is to bet the race at an online sportsbook! Since sportsbooks let you lock in odds at the moment you bet, you can be confident you have the best odds on the race.

Keep in mind that these morning lines are a public handicapper’s best guess about the odds come post time. They are no guarantee. Fourstardave Handicap Analysis

With your online betting account set up, it is time to get to know the contenders in the Fourstardave, and get ready to place your bets:

Fourstardave Handicap Favorites

Though Regal Glory is facing males for the first time, she is a logical favorite in this spot. She has won four straight starts, and she is as fast as any of her foes. She is 7-for-12 at the mile distance, and she has the tactical speed to carve a trip in a short field. Finally, she is 3-for-3 at Saratoga. This does appear to be the right spot to face the boys.

Oddly enough, one of the bigger questions is her trainer: the Fourstardave remains a top-level turf prize that has eluded Chad Brown. However, she is his better chance compared to Masen, his other entrant. Masen’s three starts in the United States have been good, a nose second in the Maker’s Mark Mile (G1) and then two wins against softer company. But, despite the shorter field, this is the tougher Grade 1 than that Keeneland race.

Casa Creed, for trainer Bill Mott, will also be among the favorites. Mott has won the Fourstardave four times, more than any other trainer. And, though Casa Creed may be better sprinting (he has one two G1 races at six furlongs on turf), he finished third in this race last year. His tactical versatility and affinity for Saratoga could get him another share this year.

Fourstardave Handicap Price Horses

The best bet in the Fourstardave Handicap is Get Smokin. He will probably be the second-longest price in the field of five, and he has to run his best. However, circumstances are good for him to run a strong effort. He shapes as the speed of the speed, and drew a clean outside gate in a short field. Three of his four wins have come at the flat mile, and he has run some good efforts at Saratoga.

Furthermore, his connections appeal. Jockey Javier Castellano is having an excellent meet. And, Get Smokin’s trainer Mark Casse has won three of the last five editions of the Fourstardave, so he knows what it takes. All things considered, in a competitive field, Get Smokin is a worthy bet.

The likely longest shot in the field is Front Run the Fed. He comes into the race out of a stakes win at Colonial, his first start in nine months, and could improve second off the layoff. He does attract strong rider Irad Ortiz. However, he has yet to find his best at this level and most of his better efforts against stakes horses have come at one-turn distances.

Free Fourstardave Handicap Picks

In a field of five, it makes sense to keep your picks fairly narrow.  You can play a few combinations, especially since one of the longer shots (Get Smokin) has such a good chance to win. However, keep those tickets small.

These are your free expert picks for the 2022 Fourstardave Handicap:

  • $20 to win - #5 Get Smokin
  • $1 exacta box - #5 Get Smokin and #3 Regal Glory
  • $0.50 trifecta box - #5 Get Smokin, #1 Casa Creed, and #3 Regal Glory
