Woodbine Mile 2023: War Bomber can get the jump on short-priced foes

If you are serious about betting horse racing, you cannot miss the Woodbine Mile (G1) at Woodbine Racetrack on Saturday, September 16! The race offers a $1,000,000 purse as well as an automatic bid to the Breeders’ Cup Mile for its winner.

The race originated as a dirt mile for three-year-olds, but was moved to the grass and opened up to older horses in 1997. Since then, it has become one of the premier races in North America. The Woodbine Mile is a perennially live prep for the Breeders’ Cup Mile. In the last dozen years, Court Vision (2011), Wise Dan (2012, 2013), World Approval (2017), and Modern Games (2022) have all swept the double, and even 2015 Breeders’ Cup Mile winner Tepin won the Woodbine Mile the next year.

Woodbine Mile Best Bet

The best bet in the 2023 Woodbine Mile is War Bomber. Winner of the local prep, the King Edward (G2), he is well proven over Woodbine’s unique, sweeping one-turn mile. And, this local turf-course aficionado also comes out for lesser-known local trainer Norm McKnight, which should help his price.

On pace, War Bomber gets the best of it. He is a stalker, meaning he should be able to get first run on My Sea Cottage, the rabbit in the field. And, though it may be that horse’s job to set an honest clip, War Bomber stalked and pounced upon a sharp pace in the King Edward, showing that perhaps he can do it once again in the big race.

Woodbine Mile Exotic Building Blocks

Master of the Seas is the likely favorite, and there is a good chance that he makes strong account. He is trained by Charlie Appleby, who is one of the sharpest trainers in the world when it comes to shipping horses, and has made Woodbine one of his regular destinations. Master of the Seas has Group-level class and pace versatility as well, making him likely to be in the frame.

Ice Chocolat is the top candidate among Mark Casse’s three-strong attack in the Woodbine Mile. He showed his class last out at Saratoga when running a good third behind Casa Creed in the Fourstardave (G1). My Sea Cottage will probably do the best he can to make pace, though in the end Ice Chocolat is more likely to pick up another underneath share.

For the lowest rungs of exotics, the value play is to bet that My Sea Cottage hangs around for a share as the longest shot on the board. He ran a decent enough fourth in the Fourstardave when taking a massive rise in class, and the switch to a one-turn configuration probably helps. This is more upside than Lucky Score, who needs more pace in front of him, or Shirl’s Speight, who would be better served with a two-turn configuration.
