It's a quiet slate across the NHL on Wednesday evening with just three games on the schedule. Among them is an intriguing matchup between two of the better teams in the league though as the New Jersey Devils head to Motown to face the Detroit Red Wings at Little Caesars Arena. The puck drops at 7 PM ET. NJ is coming off a crushing 5-4 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes in overtime on New Year's Day, their third loss in the last four. The Devils might be slumping lately, but they're still favored by 1.5 goals on the puck line while their moneyline odds sit at -166. The Red Wings come back at +150. The total is set at 6.5.
This is already the third meeting of the campaign, with both teams winning a game apiece.
New Jersey vs Detroit Betting Preview
The Devils are currently occupying second place in the Metropolitan Division with a solid 23-11-3 record, sitting just seven points back of first-place Carolina. However, they hit a cold spell as of late. NJ is just 2-6-2 in their last 10 games. In other words, the squad has won just twice during that span. While several of these matchups were one-goal outcomes, it's still not ideal for a team who was on fire. Regardless, the Devils are still a threat and possess a ton of solidity on both ends of the ice, scoring 3.35 goals per night (9th) and allowing just 2.59 goals per game (5th). Jack Hughes is leading the way offensively as he's scored 21 goals and tallied 21 assists, while Jesper Bratt and Nico Hischier are both in double-digits for goals as well. Bratt stole the show in the defeat to Carolina, scoring twice and setting up another. But, it wasn't enough to get a win as the Canes won in a penalty shootout. New Jersey tends to play better on the road, going 13-2-1 away as opposed to 10-9-2 at home. That's a good sign for Wednesday's affair.
The Red Wings haven't made the playoffs since the 2015-16 season when they were bounced in the first round. Perhaps that could change later this year, though. Detroit is enjoying a respectable campaign, going 16-12-7, which is good enough for fourth spot in the Atlantic. And while the Wings are only 3-5-2 in their previous 10 contests, the win over Ottawa was promising. The game stayed relatively quiet until Lucas Raymond started off the scoring festivities in the third before Elmer Soderblom and Michael Rasmussen followed suit with goals of their own to give Detroit a 4-2 home win. Finding the back of the net has been a problem at certain moments, but they've scored four times in three of their last four outings. Dylan Larkin, who leads the team with 32 points, hasn't contributed in a couple of games. The Red Wings will need him at his best against a strong New Jersey defense. Derek Lalonde's group is also solid at Little Caesars Arena, posting a 9-6-3 record. If they can win here, it'll be their third in a row at home.

What I'm liking here is the over. It's been hit in both matchups in October and the Devils aren't playing great defensively in recent weeks, allowing more goals than usual.
