Wednesday NHL Picks: Ride Capitals, Oilers

There are just four games on the NHL schedule Wednesday, with several contenders in action. Below, we're going to focus on two matchups in particular: The Washington Capitals vs Philadelphia Flyers, and Edmonton Oilers vs Anaheim Ducks. The Caps are red-hot, while Philly isn't too shabby, either. The Oilers meanwhile will be looking to bounce back from an ugly loss to the Los Angeles Kings, while the Ducks continue to struggle. Find the Wednesday NHL picks below.

The Capitals take their winning ways into the City of Brotherly Love on Wednesday for a Metropolitan Division affair. Washington is living up to expectations in 2022-23, scoring 3.26 goals per game and allowing just 2.7 goals. By little surprise to any hockey fan, it's Alex Ovechkin who is leading the way for the Caps, scoring 29 times and tallying 19 assists in 43 games played. There are just three other scorers in double-figures, but Washington's stout defense is keeping them afloat. That showed on Sunday as they beat the Columbus Blue Jackets 1-0. Erik Gustafsson scored the lone goal of the game while Darcy Kuemper made 38 saves, improving his GAA to 2.45.

The Flyers are in poor shape with a 16-18-7 record and remain far out of the postseason picture. On a more positive note, they're playing better as of late, going 6-4-0 in their last 10 outings. Philadelphia doesn't really shine in any particular area, possessing one of the worst offenses in the league with just 2.78 goals per game. In fact, the Flyers are conceding more goals (3.22) than scored in 2022-23. Travis Konecny is about their only notable bright spot, scoring 21 goals and supplying 22 assists in 35 appearances. The offense definitely showed up ready to do damage on Monday too, winning 4-0 against the Buffalo Sabres. Konecny set up two goals, while Joel Farabee scored once and assisted another. After beating a team of a similar caliber as the Caps, Philadelphia will be confident here.

DC has won three in a row against the Flyers, outscoring them 16-5 in the process. Take the visitors in the Wednesday NHL picks.

Oilers vs Ducks Odds & Prediction

Edmonton Oilers-1.5 (+110)-220Ov 6.5 (-125)
Anaheim Ducks+1.5 (-130)+197Un 6.5 (+113)

Edmonton is clinging onto a playoff berth at the moment and needs to perform on Wednesday against a team far below them in the standings. The Oilers dealt with a ton of penalty trouble on Monday in LA and it backfired, losing 6-3 to the Kings. Defense is a constant problem for this team and it showed. That's now two losses in a row for them. Outside of the big four of Connor McDavid, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Leon Draisatl, and Zach Hyman, there has been little production. That being said, Evander Kane is nearing a return in the next week or so, which will certainly give Edmonton a boost. After Wednesday's encounter, the Oilers head to face the San Jose Sharks, another struggling group. They need to win both of these games.

The Ducks have two stars in Trevor Zegras and Troy Terry, but even they aren't performing at a necessary level to succeed. Both guys have scored 12 goals each and combined for 40 assists. Anaheim actually ranks 31st in scoring with 2.27 goals per night and sits toward the bottom of the NHL in nearly every major offensive category. Defensively, it's even worse. They're allowing 4.07 goals per contest and almost 40 shots on goal. In a nutshell, the Ducks are in shambles. Sunday's 7-1 loss to the Boston Bruins proved just that.

The Oilers should be able to take advantage of Anaheim. They've also won three of the last four against them. Edmonton is in the Wednesday NHL picks here.
