After Francis Ngannou and Tyson Fury clash in a heavyweight match, the focus will turn to a massive bout on Saturday, December 9th between super lightweight champ Regis Prograis and lightweight champ Devin Haney. This is expected to be a very entertaining fight at the Chase Center in San Francisco, California, which holds over 19,000 fans. Both boxers are American, but Haney does hail from the Bay Area which means he'll have a bit of an advantage here. Prograis retained his belt last time out with a split-decision win over Danielito Zorrilla back in June. Haney, despite moving up a weight class here, is the clear favorite with -325 moneyline odds for an implied win probability of 76.47%. Prograis comes back at +250 and has a 28.57% chance of coming out victorious. This is the first-ever meeting between the two boxing superstars. Prograis has his super lightweight belts on the line.
Can Prograis Get it Done?
There's no simple way to put it. This is going to be a very tough fight for Prograis. Sure, Haney typically reigns in the lightweight class, but he's more than capable of keeping his unbeaten record going. That being said, Prograis is no pushover. The Louisiana native has a 29-1 record, first turning professional in 2012 after a very impressive amateur career. He actually had to relocate to Houston in 2005 after Hurricane Katrina and that gave him the opportunity to train alongside Evander Holyfield, which first got him interested in the sport.
Prograis initially had the WBA lightweight title in 2019 but not for long. After securing the belt, he ultimately lost it just months later after Josh Taylor defeated him in October of that year. As for the WBC belt which Haney is hoping to snatch, Prograis won it in November of 2022 when he knocked out Jose Zepeda in California before retaining it against Zorrilla in June in his home state of Louisiana.
At 34 years old, Prograis is a whole 10 years older than Haney, which many believe could play a factor. However, Prograis is a seasoned veteran who knows this could be one of his last shots to prove he is one of the best in the world. If he can beat Haney, one of the brightest stars in boxing, Prograis will make a serious statement.
Haney is a Star
What else is there to say? Haney is just 24 yet he's already fought as many times as Prograis, going a perfect 30-0 with 15 knockouts. There's a reason he's currently ranked as the best lightweight in the world. In 2019, Haney became the youngest-ever world champ in the sport when he won the WBC lightweight belt when Lomachenko was promoted.
Haney has had the WBC lightweight belt ever since but he's added to his accomplishments, too. The San Francisco native has the WBA super lightweight, IBF, WBO, and The Ring lightweight titles. Haney fought Aussie George Kambosos in a highly-anticipated bout Down Under and managed to beat him in 12 rounds, but was forced to fight him again due to a rematch clause. However, Haney took care of Kambosos again in Australia.
The youngster then took out Lomachenko earlier this year in one of the biggest fights of 2023. That essentially solidified Haney's stance as one of the top boxers in the world considering all that Lomachenko has accomplished in his career. December 9th presents a special opportunity for Haney to become a two-division champion for the first time. This also happens to be his first bout on home soil. Expect him to outbox Prograis and keep him working. Prograis will surely be going for the knockout but that's not Haney's style. He's only notched 15 KOs. In fact, his last seven fights were won by unanimous decision.
