Shakur Stevenson Will Capture WBC Lightweight Belt in Win Over Edwin De Los Santos
  • What: Edwin De Los Santos vs Shakur Stevenson
  • When: Thursday, November 16th
  • Where: T-Mobile Arena, Las Vegas

After Devin Haney abandoned the WBC lightweight belt in order to move up a class to fight Regis Prograis, it's now up for grabs as Shakur Stevenson and Edwin De Los Santos go to battle on Thursday, November 16th for the title. Stevenson finally gets to fight a solid opponent in De Los Santos, someone who could give the unbeaten boxer a run for his money. The American knocked out Shuichiro Yoshino back in April in his home state of New Jersey and now gets to fight at T-Mobile for the first time in his young career. De Los Santos meanwhile defeated Joseph Adorno in June. The Dominican will surely relish in the chance to be a world champion and stop a clear up-and-comer in Stevenson. Shakur Stevenson-1500-1400-1400

By no surprise, Stevenson is a massive favorite to win this bout outright. He has -1500 odds, while De Los Santos comes back at +800. The total in rounds is set at 10.5 for this title match.

Can De Los Santos Pull Off The Upset?

The reason Stevenson has yet to fight any elite opponents is due to his style of boxing, where he's extremely difficult to hit and tends to fight defensively. But, De Los Santos clearly saw this as a chance to make a name for himself in the lightweight division. At 24, the native of the Dominican Republic owns a 16-1 record with 14 knockouts and has held WBC Continental Lightweight title. De Los Santos is known as somewhat of a knockout artist with a vicious left hook and a relentless style of boxing where he's extremely aggressive.

This bout is definitely a big deal for De Los Santos, who gets to step in the ring in a massive venue and fight one of the best around. While he's definitely got the power to put any fighter in this division on the canvas, it's going to be extremely difficult to do so against a guy like Stevenson, who rarely even gets hit in the face. De Los Santos' best chance at pulling off the upset next Thursday would be via knockout because to be brutally honest, he's just not going toe to toe with Shakur for 12 rounds.

Stevenson Will be Ready to Dominate

Stevenson has already earned a reputation that most fighters wouldn't want because of how he fights, as previously mentioned and that's why no massive PPV bouts have come his way quite yet. But, there is no questioning that Shakur is on his way to being one of the top boxers in the world, no matter what weight class. The 26-year-old is a perfect 20-0 with 10 knockouts and has already held the belts in two different classes, featherweight and super featherweight. It's time for a third.

Although De Los Santos is a respectable opposition, the reality is Stevenson has yet to clash with a legitimate boxer who is in their prime. He beat Oscar Valdez, Jamel Herring, and Joet Gonzalez, who aren't exactly the best of the best. Either is De Los Santos, but Shakur also can't take his power for granted. You never know what can happen with one punch.

Stevenson wins a lot of fights via decision and does a phenomenal job of wearing his opponent down. The southpaw has lightning-quick footwork and great hands. While he might not have the same knockout power as De Los Santos, his boxing IQ is much better. Shakur has fought three times since the beginning of 2022, with two of those bouts ending via unanimous decision. Stevenson has never lost of course and should be wary of De Los Santos' primary goal which will be to knock him out. He does have a pull-back style, though. That should help.

Edwin De Los Santos vs Shakur Stevenson Picks

I do figure De Los Santos goes for it all and tries to put Stevenson on the canvas. But, that won't work and instead, the American will ultimately win via decision. Those odds aren't available quite yet at BetOnline, Bovada, or BetUS, so keep an eye out for them.
