His impressive victory in the Breeders' Cup Classic likely cemented that reality. The 2025 Kentucky Derby winner missed last year's Breeders' Cup Classic due to illness. Sovereignty closed out his racing career with wins in the Whitney Stakes and Breeders' Cup Classic. He'll be retired to stud, standing for a $150,000 fee.

The Puma was the highest-finishing three-year-old in the race. Unraced at two, The Puma has two wins, three seconds, and a third as a three-year-old. His signature win came in the Grade 1 Pennsylvania Derby.
At the outset of the 2026 racing season, it seemed that Knightsbridge was being projected to run in the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile. Then Knightsbridge won the $1 million Pacific Classic at Del Mar. Melbourne Cup favorite was Once owned by a king
Australia's premier event, the $10 million Group 1 Melbourne Cup, is set for Tuesday, November 3 at Flemington. At a distance of two miles, it's a test of endurance and is usually contested by a deep field of 24 horses.
Point Of Law is the 11-2 betting favorite in the race. He was a winner already this year in the Geelong Cup. Point Of Law also holds the distinction of listing England's King Charles III as his former owner.
Second betting choice in the opening line is Trustyourinstinct at 7-1. An international invader, the horse already has a win this year in the Curragh Cup. James McDonald, the 2021 Melbourne Cup winner, is up as Trustyourinstinct's jockey. As well, trainer Joseph O'Brien is a two-time Melbourne Cup winner. He has eight horses entered in this year's race.
Last year’s race winner Half Yours won't be back to defend his title. He was slightly injured in a fall in the Caulfield Cup. However, 2024 winner Knight's Choice, who missed last year's race after falling ill as part of a strangles outbreak, is returning to this year's race to seek another shot at victory.
Top international contender and O'Brien trainee Defiantly (10-1) is out of the race. The British horse was scratched after being ordered to undergo a secondary veterinary examination for an unstable gait.
Lifetime breeding to Kentucky Derby champion sold
A lifetime breeding right to leading sire Nyquist sold for $1.25 million to Don Alberto Corporation to headline the third Keeneland Championship Sale in Lexington.
Bluegrass Thoroughbred Services, agent, consigned the lifetime breeding right to Nyquist, who stands at Darley in Lexington, Kentucky.
The 2016 Kentucky Derby champion pulls down the highest stud fee currently taken in thoroughbred breeding at $225,000. At the time, the horse was owned by J. Paul Reddam.
Looking ahead to next year's Triple Crown
No trainer has sent out more winners of the Kentucky Derby than Bob Baffert. He currently shares the Derby career win mark for trainers at six with Ben Jones. However, in Hughes, he may have the horse capable of giving him sole possession of that mark.
Hughes was one of three unbeaten two-year-olds entered into the Breeders' Cup Juvenile, and he came out of the race as the only unbeaten horse still standing. It was the fifth career win for the horse named after U.S. Olympic hockey hero Jack Hughes. It was Jack Hughes who scored the gold medal-winning goal in overtime against Canada at the 2026 Milan Cortina Winter Games.
The Todd Pletcher-trained American History was second by a head. Salahudin, another Baffert trainee, finished third.
Baffert's six Derby-winning horses include the last two winners of the Triple Crown, Justify (2018) and American Pharoah (2015). He's also won the race with Silver Charm (1997), Real Quiet (1998), War Emblem (2002), and Authentic (2020).
Horse of the Year voting is next
The Eclipse Awards, choosing the year's best in thoroughbred racing, will be held on January 19, 2027, in Palm Beach, Florida. Of course, Horse of the Year is the top Eclipse Award. It is voted on by members of the National Thoroughbred Racing Association, Daily Racing Form, and the National Turf Writers and Broadcasters. Voters rank their top three in each category, which decides the three finalists, but only first-place votes decide the champion.
A horse must make one start in the United States or Canada during the year to be eligible.
In the 2025 vote, Sovereignty received 201 first-place votes, followed by Forever Young (17) and champion two-year-old Ted Noffey (two).
