While in-person sports betting has been made available in Nebraska and people are loving it, the fact that mobile outlets aren't in operation continues to upset plenty of people. However, it has been made more than clear on several occasions that people are ready for some Nebraska betting history to be made. That's because as things stand, Nebraska's online sports betting push has overwhelming support, and it's going to be tough for lawmakers to ignore this.
Just recently this summer, it was reported that a petition with more than 350,000 signatures was sent to the Nebraska Secretary of State’s Office in support of online betting. That is a massive number, with a clear message being sent to officials who may not be in favor of online options being put on the table. Come November, the expectation is that this will all go to a vote, but it sure looks like the good people of Nebraska have spoken here.
"Legalizing online sports betting has been a topic of debate in Nebraska for the past several years, with multiple attempts in the state Legislature failing to garner enough support to pass," Erin Bamer of the Nebraska Examiner wrote in a new piece. "Critics have long argued that the possible revenue benefits do not outweigh the social costs of the state effectively encouraging gambling."
As noted in the quote above, a lot of the opposition has brought up the negatives when it comes to online sports betting. However, few people can argue with the fact that online options would generate a ton of revenue for the state if handled properly. For now, people can only go to in-person sportsbooks for their betting needs, but that could change in the coming months. It will be interesting to see how things go down here, but it sure looks like positive steps are being taken.
A group wanting to legalize online sports betting in Nebraska has turned in more than 350,000 signatures for its two initiative petitions, making it likely the issue will be included on the November ballot. https://t.co/MFZGlUVfJq

Sports betting remains quite limited in Nebraska
It goes without saying, but sports betting remains quite limited in Nebraska, as there are currently only a handful of locations where people can get this done. That's right, for now, there are only five in-person sportsbooks in the entire state where people can place their bets, which doesn't provide a ton of flexibility. Because of this, it's no wonder that the sports betting handle isn't too high each month.
This is of course something that would be great to see changed, but unless online options arrive, we just don't see a huge jump being posted. We've seen the popularity of betting through an app, as prediction markets are operating in Nebraska, along with every other state in the USA. With those prediction markets backed by President Donald Trump at a federal level, this is how people can place online wagers.
Throughout the USA, there are 39 states with legal sports betting, but not all of them offer online options. Nebraska is on that list with no online wagers, which needs to be addressed soon. Thankfully, it looks like history could end up being made as early as Nebraska, which is what countless people are waiting on. If that happens, it'd be safe to assume that a large uptick in the handle would arrive for the state.
A fall online sports betting launch would arrive for the end of football season
One thing to keep in mind here too is that a fall online sports betting launch would arrive for the end of the football season. This of course would be ideal for fans of NFL betting. While Nebraska doesn't have a pro team, there's always going to be a ton of attention going towards the Kansas City Chiefs and others. With Patrick Mahomes back to full health, it's going to make a huge difference for KC.
Taking a look at the NFL betting as a whole, the LA Rams hold the top Super Bowl betting odds, but people can't bet on that futures outcome online unless they do it through a prediction market. However, if the laws in the state are changed in November, then online sports betting for the NFL action would be in place before the postseason gets underway, which would be a complete and total game-changer.
You've got to figure that people all over Nebraska will be pretty dang fired up to bet on college football as well. Before we jump ahead to things there, however, we've got to see what people in Nebraska vote on come November. It'd be great to see things voted in, with this new petition speaking volumes to the popularity of the idea alone.
