Hurricanes Will Beat Flyers on Tuesday Night

Tuesday evening brings a Metropolitan Division clash between the Carolina Hurricanes and the Philadelphia Flyers at Wells Fargo Center in the City of Brotherly Love. The puck is scheduled to drop at 7:30 PM ET. Carolina is second in the division and just beat the Columbus Blue Jackets 3-2 on Sunday to collect their 12th victory of the campaign. As for Philly, they won on Saturday in a shootout against the New York Islanders. Both teams have a bit of momentum heading into this matchup. Continue reading for the Hurricanes vs Flyers picks.

Philadelphia Flyers+141+145+135

The Hurricanes are the favorite with -158 moneyline odds for an implied win probability of 61.24%. The Flyers come back at +141 and have a 41.49% chance of taking this one. Recent meetings heavily favor the visitors. Carolina has won eight of the last nine against Philly, but the Flyers did win the most recent matchup on November 16th by a score of 3-1.

Carolina Looking Solid

The Hurricanes made a run to the conference finals last season and very much look like a contender again. Carolina is seven points behind the New York Rangers in the Metropolitan Division with 24 points and a 12-8-0 record. They're 6-4-0 in their last 10 games and have won three of the previous four. Last Friday was an embarrassing 8-2 blowout to the Tampa Bay Lightning but the Canes made sure to bounce back over the weekend.

They were actually down 2-0 and looked to be in for another loss before scoring three unanswered goals in just eight minutes en route to a heroic victory. Jesperi Kotkaniemi, Brady Skjei, and Andrei Svechnikov scored the goals, with the latter producing the winner in dramatic fashion. Although Carolina didn't come alive until late, this was a gritty win that really showed the team's identity.

The Hurricanes aren't standing out in any particular area and actually have a zero goal difference, scoring 67 times and also allowing the same number of goals. Teuvo Teravainen has been their most lethal finisher, netting 10 and supplying five assists. Sebastian Aho meanwhile has a team-best 17 points, scoring five and assisting 12. There are a lot of different guys on the Carolina roster who can get it done offensively, it's just a matter of consistency. Playing on the road isn't exactly a strong suit for the Hurricanes, compiling a 5-6-0 record. At home, they've only lost twice. That Philly atmosphere is never easy to deal with, either. Tuesday will be a challenge.

Philly Opening Some Eyes

It's been a long time since the Flyers were a contender. No one is saying they're going to be one in 2023-24, but it's clear Philadelphia is exceeding expectations so far. The team is 11-9-1 through 21 games and sits in third place in the division, just one point behind Carolina. A win here would move them ahead of the Hurricanes. As of late, the Flyers are playing great hockey, only losing two of their previous eight outings. A pair of back-to-back losses to the Islanders and Rangers wasn't ideal but Philly bounced back on Saturday with a slim shootout win over the Isles.

The Flyers actually had a whopping 40 shots but none could find the net in this one, which led to the shootout. Tyson Foerster ended up making the difference. Philly is even remotely this good so far due to their blue line, which allows only 2.76 goals per game. That ranks eighth in the NHL. Offensively, Travis Konecny is leading the charge with 11 goals and four assists. Defenceman Travis Sanheim has a team-best 16 points with two goals and 14 assists.

As you saw above, the Flyers don't have the best track record versus Carolina. However, the 3-1 victory earlier in the month was convincing, with Carter Hart stopping 31 of 32 shots while Konecny, Owen Tippett, and Ryan Poehling all got in on the action. Philly will need another all-around effort in order to collect another win against the Hurricanes on Tuesday. Not easy, but possible.

Hurricanes vs Flyers Picks

Dating back to 2019, Carolina is 13-5 against Philadelphia. That's why I go with any bet but the Canes moneyline here. They will get it done on the road.
