Over the decades, it expanded its retail estate across the UK — at one time claiming well over 1,300 shops — and branched into online gambling. In 2011, Betfred acquired the government-owned Tote for £265 million, reinforcing its ties to horse racing, before selling it in 2019. Today, the company’s online arm, Petfre (Gibraltar) Limited, is licensed in Gibraltar (and also regulated by the UK Gambling Commission for the UK market), though its core operations and brand presence remain UK-centric.
Internationally, Betfred entered the U.S. sports betting market in 2020 through licenses and partnerships across several states, but after struggling with intense competition and regulatory pressures, the company formally exited in July 2025, closing its online operations in Pennsylvania — its final U.S. market — and ending its digital presence in the country.
Today, Betfred continues to operate primarily in the U.K. (both via its retail shop network and online offerings), with its online business run from Gibraltar under Petfre, and also maintains some international interests — for example in South Africa, where it has holdings in betting halls and related operations.
