El Camino Real Derby winners have a history of doing well in the Preakness, most recently when Rombauer won the 2021 edition of the race and then won in Baltimore as well.

#2 Mackinnon will probably go off the favorite, and he has several things to support his chance. Though he has never run on Tapeta, turf form often transfers well to the footing. He has three wins, more than anyone else in the field. He also ran a great third in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf despite some early trouble, proving he is resilient when things do not go his way.
#6 Boise is the most interesting horse in this group. Though he disappointed in a stakes race at Santa Anita last month, his very close fourth on the Breeders’ Cup undercard three starts back at Del Mar suggests he has the quality for this kind of spot. He also has a victory in his only Tapeta try, two starts back in a stakes race. Look for him to roll late as the second or third betting choice.
#4 Blackadder will take money because he is trained by Bob Baffert, but there are reasons to be skeptical. His only win came in maiden company, but he was running on dirt against horses who originally entered for turf. In fact, Blackadder has yet to run on either a synthetic or a turf course, raising questions about how he is going to handle a new surface versus winners.
El Camino Real Derby Value Horses
When building exotic tickets, there are a few good longshots to consider around Boise and Mackinnon.
#11 Del Mo is the second-stringer from the Doug O’Neill barn. Based at Golden Gate, Del Mo broke his maiden at a mile over the course last month. He is tactical enough to find a spot from the outside, and his pedigree appeals for the extra furlong of ground, making him a candidate to improve in this spot.
#1 Stormy Samurai is mired in on the fence, but has won from the rail before. He is another with an appealing pedigree to stretch out — he has never gone two turns, but he may just find his place. He also already has a victory over winners, since his last-out score came in a first-level allowance.
#10 Il Bellator is an interesting outsider for deeper tickets. Drawn near the outside, but with tactical speed, he can get a clean stalking trip. The barn does well with layoff horses, and also with last-out maiden winners. That maiden score came in his first two-turn try, as well, suggesting he may just be finding his best game.
