Parx Racing
Parx in Bensalem is Pennsylvania's premier thoroughbred venue. It is the home of the Pennsylvania Derby and the Cotillion Stakes.
The 2026 meet runs 149 live race days. Parx typically cards Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, with selected Fridays and weekends added.
Racing pauses for three weeks from the last week of July into mid-August. We also note a second week off directly after the Pennsylvania Derby.
Turf racing returns in 2026. Parx has not run on grass since September 2024, following problems with the old course. A new turf course went in this spring.
The track sits inside a large casino complex, and its racebook takes simulcast wagers year-round.

Penn National Race Course
Penn National in Grantville is central Pennsylvania's thoroughbred track. The Hollywood Casino fronts the property.
The live meet runs January through March, then June through December. Post time is 6 pm daily, which makes it one of the better evening simulcast options on the East Coast.
Its signature race is the Penn Mile, a Grade 3 turf event. Penn National cards all of its Pennsylvania-bred stakes on turf.
Simulcast wagering runs year-round, including through the spring and autumn gaps in the live calendar.

Presque Isle Downs
Presque Isle Downs in Erie is Pennsylvania's northwestern thoroughbred venue. Live racing runs from May 18 to October 22, with a 3:30 post time.
Everything here is contested on a synthetic Tapeta surface. In our analysis, that makes Presque Isle a different handicapping puzzle from the dirt tracks downstate. Form does not always transfer.
The flagship is the Presque Isle Downs Masters, a Grade 2 sprint for fillies and mares.

Pennsylvania Harness racing tracks
Pennsylvania's three harness tracks cover Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and the Pocono region. Standardbred racing was legalized here in 1963, and the circuit has run continuously since.
Hollywood Casino at The Meadows
The Meadows in Washington is the Pittsburgh area harness track. It is roughly 25 miles southwest of the city.
Live harness racing runs almost the whole year, pausing for one week in April and one in September.
The track hosts the Delvin Miller Adios Pace for the Orchids. It's one of the sport's most prestigious events for three-year-old pacers. A Hollywood Casino operates on-site.

Harrah's Philadelphia in Chester is the Philadelphia area harness venue. It sits along the Delaware River, about 30 minutes south of Center City.
The live meet runs from early April through mid-December. Super Sunday is its biggest stakes card of the year.
Simulcast wagering continues year-round through the winter break.

Mohegan Pennsylvania
Mohegan Pennsylvania in Wilkes-Barre serves northeastern Pennsylvania. The track is a 5/8-mile oval, tighter than the one-mile ovals downstate.
Harness racing runs from mid-February through late November. The Earl Beal Jr. Memorial for trotters and the Max Hempt Memorial for pacers are its richest races.
The venue also operates The Downs at Lehigh Valley, covered above. A Mohegan casino sits on site.

Major Pennsylvania horse races
The next major date on the Pennsylvania calendar is Presque Isle Downs Masters Day on Friday, September 18, 2026. Pennsylvania Derby Day at Parx follows the very next afternoon.
That Saturday is one of the richest single days of racing anywhere in the United States. Two Grade 1 races worth a million dollars each, on the same card.

Pennsylvania horse racing history
Racing in Pennsylvania goes back to the colonial period. Philadelphia's Race Street reportedly took its name because William Penn raced horses along it.
In the early 1800s, Hunting Park hosted the first one-mile trotting track in the United States. The site became a public park by 1855.
The modern industry dates from two legislative moments. Harness racing was legalized in 1963, and thoroughbred pari-mutuel wagering followed in 1968.
Those laws built the six-track circuit still running today. The retail side has contracted sharply since, with the storefront OTB network largely gone by 2024.
