Haiti Couleurs hasn’t proven himself at this level yet, but he is heading the right way. Though his win last out at Newbury came over heavy ground, but he has form over better ground like he will get this time, including a win over good-to-soft ground last year in a novice chase at Cheltenham. Unlike a lot of horses with distance questions, the stretch out should suit him very well, and he is well weighted compared to other leading prospects.
Cheltenham Gold Cup Favorites
Gaelic Warrior comes out for trainer Willie Mullins, who has won this race four times. He ended his campaign last year with two graded wins and started the current season with a top-level win at Punchestown. He has had two good races since them, a short-head third in the King George VI (G1) and a third in the Irish Gold Cup (G1), a race that frequently has horses step up at Cheltenham.
The winner of the aforementioned King George was The Jukebox Man, who rides four straight wins into the Cheltenham festival. He is undefeated in four starts over fences, including two starts out of the novice ranks and against more experienced chasers. He still has to prove he can handle this longer distance, but the ground should suit and he has done nothing wrong since switching from hurdles to chasing.
Cheltenham Gold Cup Exotics Horses
Firefox also comes out of the Irish Gold Cup, so had some tables to turn on Gaelic Warrior after finishing fourth there. But, he’ll be a huge price for a horse with some upside coming out of a frequently live prep, and is shortening in the overseas markets, meaning there’s some enthusiasm. He’ll still be a huge price, and the better ground than he got at Leopardstown can move this Gordon Elliott forward.
Envoi Allen may not get all the way there at the age of 12, but for the exotics, this Henry De Bromhead trainee could find enough. He has freshened up since a win at Down Royal in November, his only start this season. The ground should suit him well, he gets a light impost, and de Bromhead knows how to get a horse to peak this time of year.
