Pegasus World Cup all roads lead through Tappan Street

The first top-level showcase of the year in the older-horse dirt division happens Saturday, January 24 in the Pegasus World Cup at Gulfstream Park! The 1 ⅛-mile dirt race offers a colossal $3 million purse, one of the biggest of the year, and its winner is in the driver’s seat heading into the year. With an overflow field of top horses, it will also be one of the best horse racing betting opportunities of the winter season!

2026 marks the 10th edition of the Pegasus World Cup. In its short history its winners have already included two hall of fame inductees, Arrogate and Gun Runner. Other Breeders’ Cup Classic winners including Knicks Go and White Abarrio have also won. White Abarrio also chases history in 2026 – if he wins Saturday, he will become the first horse to spring the Pegasus World Cup repeat.

Will he repeat, or will a new face join this illustrious list? Read on to find out, and to know the best places to bet the Pegasus World Cup online!

The morning-line odds from the track can be a good sketch of which horses are expected to be heavily bet or not. However, they are no guarantee of an on-track price. If you bet at the track, late action on your horse means the odds on your pick may plummet.

You can avoid that uncertainty by betting the Pegasus World Cup at an online sportsbook. Online sportsbooks offer fixed-odds wagering on the biggest races of the year including the Pegasus World Cup. That way, if you see an overlay – just bet it, and you’ll know exactly what price you’ll get when your horse wins. It’s that easy!

Pegasus World Cup Handicapping

Now that you know where to bet the race, it is time to meet the field and pick the winner of the 2026 Pegasus World Cup!

Pegasus World Cup Best Bet

The best bet in the 2026 Pegasus World Cup is Tappan Street. Though he is still lightly raced, he has all the tools to put it together on the biggest stage. He has already won a Grade 1 at this course and distance – beating no less than Sovereignty to do so in last year’s Florida Derby (G1).

Though he was laid off injured after that, he came back with a productive return against older allowance horses. He has upside to improve second off the lay for Brad Cox, he gets back Luis Saez (his regular rider last winter and spring), and he has the tactical pace to work a trip behind a lot of speed in the Pegasus.

Pegasus World Cup Longshot

For anyone who likes to play big bombs, Poster is the longshot to put in focus. The plethora of pace horses in the Pegasus means Poster gets a good setup to come from off the pace, and he often finds late pace that stacks up very well against this field. He only missed by a head to Skippylongstocking in his local prep. Going third off the lay and blinkers-on for Eoin Harty, he has room to improve off that start, and he’ll be an overlaid price to make that step forward.

Pegasus World Cup Favorites

Take a stand against morning-line favorite Disco Time. He is undefeated in five starts, sure, but has yet to face older horses – or even try a level above Grade 3. He has yet to try a distance farther than 1 1/16 miles. And, he is hemmed in along the rail inside of a lot of other horses who, like him, have plenty of early speed. All that is a lot for him to have to prove at a short price in a large, quality field.

White Abarrio, the other of the three horses likely to be at the top of the market, has more to recommend him. Last year’s Pegasus winner hasn’t raced since August, but has been able to come back sharp off of layoffs and he does tend to find his best at Gulfstream. He is versatile enough to run well from virtually any trip or post, and should be boxing on well in the lane.

Pegasus World Cup Exotics Horses

Full Serrano needs to bounce back from a fifth-place outing in his repeat attempt in the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile last out, but he has been able to fire well fresh before. Though he has never raced at Gulfstream, his West Coast speed should play well – especially since, given all the other speed in the race, he has been able to box on even after disputing a tough pace.

Banishing was troubled two back in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint, but otherwise just keeps showing up every single time. He’ll probably find a few too good, but given his pace versatility and 1 ⅛-mile form, one of his better races could round out an exotic at a price. Skippylongstocking shines with Tyle Gaffalione in the irons, often finds a piece at 1 ⅛ miles and at Gulfstream, and a modest step forward from his local-prep win can get him another piece of the Pegasus.
