FanDuel sportsbook has officially opened up operations in the Puerto Rico sports betting market. OSB breaks down what it means.

FanDuel has officially joined the Puerto Rico sports betting market.

The move is a long time coming. When Puerto Rico sports betting launched in 2022, it did so with six available sports wagering licenses. However, more than two years later, over half of those spots remain unfilled.

BetMGM Sportsbook was the first of the U.S. online sports betting apps to debut in the market. Caesars Sportsbook followed suit roughly one month. The launch of FanDuel in Puerto Rico gives the market three live operators.

Are more on the way? And how big a deal is FanDuel’s entry into the Island of Enchantment?

FanDuel Confirms Puerto Rico Sports Betting Launch

Here is Tom Nightingale from SBC Americas will the full details on FanDuel setting up shop in Puerto Rico:

“The U.S. market-leading sports betting platform FanDuel Sportsbook is now available in Puerto Rico. The Flutter-owned company announced on Thursday that FanDuel Sportsbook is now available online and via mobile in the unincorporated U.S. territory. FanDuel also unveiled the opening of a new retail sportsbook in partnership with CAGE Sports in San Juan. Puerto Rico is the 24th state or territory where FanDuel offers mobile sports betting. Puerto Rico Gaming Commission Interim Director Juan Santaella said last May that there were six licensed online sports betting operators as of that time. FanDuel is only the third to launch online betting.”

Expanding into the Puerto Rico sports betting market is a no-brainer for FanDuel. As online sports betting in the United States has continued its meteoric rise, the Flutter-owned company has seen its own ubiquity skyrocket. Across the country, they have monopoly-sized shares of many markets.

Granted, we could see a different result in this case. FanDuel officially debuted in Puerto Rico towards the middle of January 2025. Caesars and BetMGM have roughly a two-year head-start on their competition. It may take FanDuel a while to rival their market share.

Then again, maybe not. Along with DraftKings, FanDuel’s name is among the most synonymous with sports betting. People in markets and territories without wagering are even intimately familiar with them. That could prompt a flood of business from Puerto Rico residents. Especially when you consider the available sports betting bonuses and promotions that will be offered to new customers.

Will FanDuel Significantly Impact Market Share for Other Puerto Rico Sportsbooks?

In fact, you can even make the case that FanDuel's launch will adversely impact other Puerto Rico sportsbooks.

Indeed, market competition is a good thing—particularly for consumers. But FanDuel is generally a behemoth when it comes to total volume of business. Choose a market for sports betting in the United States at random, and FanDuel is likely to have at least 40 percent of that territory’s wagers.

According to the Sports Business Journal, approximately 37 percent of all sports bets in the United States are processed with FanDuel. And again, there are locations where that share will be more dramatic.

Of course, it is much too early to know whether the Puerto Rico sports betting market will gravitate as heavily toward FanDuel. The Island of Enchantment’s detachment from the rest of the United States insulates them against identical industry trends. Caesars and BetMGM may very well retain their edge.

Still, FanDuel will eat into the competition’s market share at least a little bit. That is how a broader pool of options works. Business becomes more diluted in any one area—and more spread out overall.

FanDuel Isn’t The Only Sportsbook Debuting in Puerto Rico

Furthermore, Caesars and BetMGM are not only competing with the arrival of FanDuel. DraftKings sportsbook is apparently right behind them.

The Massachusetts-based company was already granted Puerto Rico access a while ago. To date, though, they have yet to make their services available. That is bound to change. DraftKings would not obtain a license to a market and then decide to opt against ever using it.

Whether DraftKings debuts in Puerto Rico anytime soon is a separate question. They do not have a timeline set to follow FanDuel. Multiple outlets are reporting that DraftKings continues to wait on Puerto Rico sports betting regulatory approval.

Once both DraftKings and FanDuel come to the Caribbean Island, though, you better believe Caesars and BetMGM will be feeling the heat. As the Sports Business Journal notes, more than two-thirds of all sports bets placed in the United States combine to go through FanDuel and DraftKings. There is no escaping their market domination.

As explained previously, the earlier start for BetMGM and Caesars could serve them. But we could just as easily fast forward two or three years from now and find out FanDuel and DraftKings have an 80 percent or larger share of the Puerto Rico sports betting handle. And if you think that number is unbelievable, think again. An 80-plus-percent combined market share is quite routine for the two sites.

Even if DraftKings and FanDuel do not heavily detract from BetMGM and Caesars, it will be interesting to see if they dissuade any more new entrants. A DraftKings launch in Puerto Rico would still leave the Island with two more online sports betting licenses. But will any sportsbooks flock to a market that already has four of the most popular betting sites up and operating?

Answering that now is difficult. But aside from ESPN Bet or Fanatics Sportsbook, it may be tough to find willing competitors. Regardless, the continued expansion of wagering in Puerto Rico does prove one thing for sure: that sports betting on the Island of Enchantment isn’t going anywhere.
