There are over one hundred different heroes to choose from, with a variety of different skill sets, strengths, and weaknesses. Dota 2 is fairly complex and it can be challenging to learn the game, making the professional Dota 2 players so compelling to watch.
Standard Dota 2 competitive matches are played in a best of three formats, and on occasion best of five in the finals.
Oddsmakers have the tough job of monitoring the competitors and determining Dota 2 odds for each matchup - and to do this they need to understand each and every player, and how they’ll stack up against the competition to even know where to set the betting odds.
The main annual championship tournament for Dota 2 is called The International, which boasts the biggest prize pool and the largest following. The purse for the tournament is over $25 million, and the champions can expect around $11 million.
While the goal of the game is fairly straightforward - to destroy the tower on the opposing team’s side, it leaves us to bet on a few different options when it comes to betting on Dota 2. We are going to take a look at popular Dota 2 betting options, and where you can place your bet on Dota 2.
Betting on Dota 2
Like any other sport, it’s recommended to do some research before placing your bets. We recommend doing some heavy player or team research to get to know the strengths and weaknesses of each team you plan to bet on.
When you look for Dota 2 betting odds, you should always check a few different online sportsbooks before placing your wagers. Not all sportsbooks are the same, and there is no standard for odds so you can do a little line shopping before you settle on one sportsbook.
Let’s take a look at the different types of Dota 2 betting options:
Dota 2 Moneyline
The most popular Dota 2 betting type is by far the moneyline wager, and not just because it is the most simple sports bet you can make. Many intermediate and professional sports bettors prefer to bet the moneyline on eSports, especially on Dota 2.
To bet on the Dota 2 moneyline, your job is to determine who you think will win the match. When the odds for each match are released, each team will have a number next to it. This represents the likelihood of that team winning the match. With American odds, you will see a positive number which denotes the underdog, and a negative number which denotes the favorite.
If you have a match that is significantly one-sided skillwise, the odds would look a little like this:
- Team A (+500)
- Team B (-350)
What this means, is that you would have to bet $350 to win $100 if you choose to bet the favorite, Team B. If you chose the underdog, Team A, you would win $500 on a $100 bet. Both of these will also receive their initial stake back as well. This is an easy way to look at odds to project your potential winnings. You don’t have to bet $100 on every match, it’s just an easy visual for our betting guide.
Dota 2 Point Spreads
The Dota 2 point spread essentially is a wager that gives the underdog a bit of a leg up, before the game even starts. This is also called a Map Handicap in Dota 2. Your team doesn’t necessarily have to win the match but needs to cover the spread.
This spread is based on the best of three formats, where their map handicaps are based on how many of the three games they win. If Team A has a -1.5 handicap, they must go 2-0 for your bet to cash. Conversely, If Team B has +1.5 odds, they can lose by one round, (2-1) and still lead to a winning bet slip.
Dota 2 Totals
Totals are another easy wager to understand, as it’s as simple as deciding whether the total of the two team’s combined points will be over or under the listed odds. Since Dota 2 doesn’t have traditional points systems like other sports and are fairly low scoring, these are called ‘total maps’, and as we learned earlier, maps = rounds.
If the total is set at 2.5 maps or rounds, if you feel the game won’t last all three rounds, you will select the under, and if you think the game will go all three rounds, select the over.
Dota 2 Prop Bets
Prop bets are fun and unique betting opportunities that most gamblers play just for fun. They usually are bet live during gameplay and are not tied to the final scores.
Types of props you could find during a Dota 2 game:
- Map x duration
- Map x most kills
- Odd/Even maps
- Map x first team to draw blood
- Correct map score
There can be a variety of other props available to bet on during any Dota 2 match, these are just the most popular.
