Not only is League of Legends the most popular game to watch on Twitch, but it’s also the most popular esport to bet on. Betting on League of Legends works the same way as betting on any other sport or event - and usually features moneylines, props, and futures.
The Annual League of Legends season is concluded with Worlds. Worlds is the event that brings together all the separate regions around the world for a month of the best League of Legends players on the planet. The odds were last updated on October 28, 2020:
|2020 Worlds Outright Winners Odds|
The World Championship is the most popular League of Legends event to place a wager on. The tournament series consists of the 2020 Mid-Season Invitational, the 2020 Season World Championship and the All-Star 2020. The 10th edition of the Worlds is scheduled to be held in Shanghai, China, at the Shanghai Stadium with a capacity of 55,000 spectators.
Teams from each of the 12 leagues have been competing in seasonal splits, the first from January to May, then second June to September. Teams that win the first split play in the 2020 Mid-Season Invitational and the top teams from the second split will qualify for the Worlds in October.
While 2020 has been off to a rocky start, it’s hard to say whether the invitational or the Worlds will be pushed back due to COVID-19, but where eSports are played online it could be possible to forego the crowds and host the tournament fully online.
Regardless, we need to be prepared and the best way is to learn how to bet on LoL, and the best sportsbooks for League of Legends, so let’s get to it.
Betting on League of Legends
If you look at any League of Legends tournament, there will be two teams of players matched against each other. Some games can be closely matched, and some can pit strong teams against weak teams - just like any other sport.
It’s important to familiarize yourself with the teams playing, understanding their strengths and weaknesses and unique skill sets will help you with your LoL betting strategy.
League of Legends Moneyline
For the most part, you will be betting on a League of Legends moneyline - which is betting which team will win the match outright. This is a pretty standard and easy bet for beginners, but many intermediate and professional sports bettors still like to bet the moneyline in eSports as well.
If you have two teams playing a game, and let’s say they’re pretty unevenly matched, and one team is heavily favored to win, the oddsmakers will give them betting odds that have a negative number (-750 for instance). Their opponent will be a pretty big underdog in this situation, and their betting odds will look like (+500). These odds are the probability of them winning the match, and how much you would win by placing a wager.
If the match is more closely matched, the LoL odds will be lower, likely -110 or +100, as oddsmakers don’t feel confident offering higher odds with the uncertainty of the matchup. Basically in these situations, the number represents how much you would make with a $100 wager. You don’t have to bet $100, you can bet any denomination, it’s just a good starter figure to use to calculate odds.
If the favorite’s odds are -110, that’s how much you would have to bet to win $100 plus your initial stake ($210 total). If the underdog’s odds are +100, you’re betting $100 to earn $100 ($200 total).
In our earlier example, -750 indicates you’d have to bet $750 to win $100 ($850 total) and +500 would mean you could win $500 on a $100 bet ($600 total).
League of Legends Totals
Another very simple bet to place, totals are another outcome-based wager only this time, you’re betting on how many rounds the game will last. The oddsmakers will project which round they believe the game will end, and you will have to select whether you think the game will go over or under that number.
If two teams are fairly evenly matched, and the total is 2.5, you could bet the OVER and as long as those teams make it to the third round, you win. Many eSports bettors like this option when they aren’t confident in which team will win the game outright.
League of Legends Prop Bets
Prop bets are fun and unique bets you can place on any situation or occurrence in the game. You can bet on which team will win a certain Map, which team will score the first kill, be the first to 10 kills, and destroy the first tower. It depends on which sportsbook you choose to play because not all sportsbooks offer props with this much detail.
League of Legends Futures
LoL futures betting odds are usually listed well in advance of the tournament and usually offer some great value odds on teams to win the Championship outright. Depending on your sportsbook, other options include who will make the playoffs. These bets are placed far in advance of the actual tournaments so the odds are much juicier, but the real value lies in those big longshot underdogs if they can pull off a big W.
Best League of Legends Betting Sites
