Following six weeks of qualifying races where a total of 196 dogs tried their absolute best to make the big stage, the most prestigious race in the sport is almost here. The 2022 English Greyhound Derby is set for Saturday in the UK, with six dogs set to battle it out for the ultimate prize. The winner will win £175,000. This competition has taken place since 1927 and this is the fourth year since 2017 it's been held at Towcester.
The semifinals concluded last weekend and now we have Romeo Magico, Savana Beau, Kildare, Hello Hammond, Micky’s Barrett, and Priceless Jet in the final. The winner of last year's race was Thorn Falcon, while Kilara Lion finished as runner-up. Patrick Janssens trained both dogs.

Romeo Magico
Romeo Magico is the likely favorite in Saturday's race and for good reason. He has been racing against the best of the best since the beginning of his career and typically races well at Towcester. Magico has also won four of his last six starts. However, it wasn't the best start to the 2022 English Greyhound Derby for Romeo, finishing third in his opening race. But, by the quarterfinals, Magico found his form and captured that race by a healthy margin of almost five lengths. The semifinals proved to be smooth sailing as he won comfortably. Romeo is in trap 4 for the final. There's lots of experience behind Magico as well, with three-time Greyhound winner Graham Holland serving as his trainer.
Priceless Jet
Priceless Jet is an intriguing option for this race because he holds the two-time track record for this distance. Priceless has enjoyed a solid year when it comes to competitions, beating 750 in July of 2021 in Ireland and also made the finals in St. Leger and Shelbourne. His trainer, Paul Hennessy, who is also in charge of Hello Hammond, has won the English Greyhound Derby twice before therefore the expertise is certainly there behind Priceless Jet.
Kildare
Kildare is looking very impressive in this competition. Although he isn't super experienced, Kildare has shown well, finishing as runner-up to Le Bonite in the opening round. Kildare then actually beat last year's winner, Thorn Falcon, in the second round. The quarterfinals ended up being a second-place finish for the one-year-old, before getting revenge on Priceless Jet, who beat him in the quarters, coming out victorious in the semis just in front of his rival. Trainer Peter Cronin is a seasoned veteran in the sport and knows what it takes to succeed, but he's yet to win this competition therefore he'll be searching for a title at the 2022 English Greyhound Derby. Kildare might be young but he's full of energy and shouldn't be counted out for this race.
Hello Hammond
Hello Hammond is one of the star Greyhounds to come out of Ireland. After failing to find consistency in past years, 2022 has been a whole different story for Hammond, who found himself in three finals this year and contested in all of the races. Paul Hennessy is also the trainer here and as previously mentioned, is a vet at this stage. Hello Hammond has won two of his last five races and finished in at least third place in the previous five. This could be a dark horse pick for Saturday's 2022 English Greyhound Derby given his recent form and confidence.

Despite some of these dogs running well in recent weeks, you can't bet against Romeo Magico. He came in at a blistering 29.06 seconds in the semifinals. That was the fastest speed of any of the 12 Greyhounds who raced. Magico has seen it all and continues to be consistent on a weekly basis. Plus, he flourishes at Towcester. Romeo Magico is the surefire pick as the 2022 English Greyhound Derby winner.
