NASCAR Ally 400 Preview
The Nashville Speedway made its NASCAR debut a year ago. Therefore, there’s not a lot of data we can use to preview the 2022 Ally 400 since this is only the second such event in history. Throw in the new Next Gen car, and we have an even bigger curveball to take a swing at whilst betting.
Still, here’s what we can expect this weekend: a track with above-average speeds of 160 miles per hour — at least that’s what it clocked in the inaugural 2021 event. The event is contested over 300 laps on a moderately-banked 1.33-mile track that is concrete paved. The layout in Nashville drew comparisons to tracks like the Kansas Speedway and World Wide Technology Raceway.
Kyle Larson won the 2021 event, which explains why he’s the betting favorite across sportsbooks going into Sunday. However, picking Larson hasn’t been the best betting strategy this season with only one win all year long. Ross Chastain, William Byron, Aric Almirola, and Kevin Harvick rounded out the top-5 at last year’s Ally 400.
Of the five, Chastain has sustained his success most up to this point in the 2022 season. His 520 points is second to only Chase Elliott in the Cup Series standing. Chastain’s two victories are tied with Denny Hamlin, Joey Logano, and Byron for most in the whole circuit.

William Byron
We’re going to be completely upfront and say Byron is cold right now. Ice cold, in fact. Since his victory in Martinsville, he’s placed in the top-5 in just one of 10 races. We do put a lot of stock into recent performances when making NASCAR picks, but Byron is one we’re willing to overlook because he hasn’t been as bad as recent final finishes seem to indicate.
Case in point: he led 24 and 25 laps at Darlington and Kansas, respectively. Then at Charlotte, he started at fifth before wrecking. See? Byron has been in contention despite the negative sentiment around him as of late.
Furthermore, Byron had a strong showing at this event a year ago. In 2021, he finished third overall. So perhaps a return to the Nashville Superspeedway is just what Byron needs to snap out of this funk. We’re certainly betting that’s the case.
Kevin Harvick
Harvick has become a punching bag of sorts this season. That’s because the ex-Cup Series champion has zero wins in 2022 and only four podium finishes. In a way, he’s come to embody the story of NASCAR “old guys” struggling to adjust to the Next Gen vehicle alongside the likes of Truex Jr. and Kurt Busch.
However, Harvick is starting to become overlooked. If anything, it’s obvious he’s catching up to the Next Gen car. It’s translated in a measure of consistency as of late — top-4 finishes in three of the past five races. The momentum is there for Harvick, perhaps to win, but definitely to finish top-5. The latter is a prop bet worth looking into in case you’re convinced Harvick isn’t winning material quite yet. Take him to compete for first at the very least.
Denny Hamlin
Speaking of forgotten “old guys”, Hamlin is another overlooked driver worthy of a wager. It’s a superspeedway race, after all, and Hamlin has perhaps the best pedigree in the whole sport on such events. Remember how we said this Nashville Speedway isn’t all that different from the one in Kansas? Well, Hamlin finished fourth at that one this year. He’s a great driver to round out your bets come Ally 400 time.
