2022 NASCAR Sonoma Race Preview
Before NASCAR went crazy on road races in the Cup Series schedule, Sonoma Raceway had the distinction of being one of just two held all-year long. Despite that no longer being the case (NASCAR will have seven road races this year), there’s still something special about this track. This event has been a regular since 1989, providing all sorts of chaos in the time since. Perhaps that chaos is best to start with when previewing the 2022 Sonoma race.
Located not far from the Golden Gate Bridge, the road course features more than 160 feet of elevation change from its highest point to the lowest. Compared to other road courses, it’s on the slower side — but requires more technical driving skills. Therefore, it’s not uncommon for cars to stray away from the track and into the dirt, or worse, the wall.
It takes a real crafty driver to win here. If you look at all the recent winners, it’s really only the elite drivers who’ve taken the checkered flag — Jimmie Johnson, Martin Truex Jr., the Busch brothers, etc. The reigning champion is Kyle Larson, and probably why he’s the favorite to win across sportsbooks right now.
It’s also worth pointing out the current Cup Series standings so you know what’s at stake come race day. Chase Elliott, Kyle Busch, and Ryan Chastain are all neck-and-neck in the top-3 spots, respectively. Only 17 points separate first-place Elliott from third-place Chastain. For comparison's sake, the Sonoma favorite, Larson, is in seventh — 63 points behind first.
Betting Picks To Win 2022 Sonoma Race

Martin Truex Jr.
We absolutely love Truex Jr. in this spot and heck, we’re surprised he’s as high as +900 to win at the moment. He’s won this race on three different occasions, which is tied for second-most all-time (Gordon owns the record with five victories). Moreover, he’s finished in the top-3 at Sonoma on three straight occasions. No one else in the field matches Truex’s level of success here.
Perhaps oddsmakers aren’t as high on Truex as we are due to his somewhat weird 2022 performance. Sure, he’s in fifth place in the Cup Series standings, but he owns no wins and just two podium finishes all year long. Maybe returning to a Sonoma track he knows all too well is the EXACT antidote Truex needs to finally break into the win column. We’re betting on it to happen!
Kyle Larson
Remember how we said NASCAR went big on road races all of a sudden? Well, no one benefited more from it than Larson. In 2021, Larson won three road course competitions, then also finished second and third in different road events. The performances keyed him to a 2022 Cup Series championship.
Sure, he had a rough go at 2022’s only road course at COTA earlier this season, finishing in 29th. But we feel that’s more an anomaly than anything else. Larson is still the unquestioned “road warrior” in the circuit right now, and deserves a bet from you in this spot!
Kyle Busch
Outside of Truex Jr., Busch is the only other active driver with multiple victories at Sonoma over his career. He’s won this event in 2008 and 2015 — a seven-year gap between then. And what would you know, it’s been seven years since his prior victory! Coincidence or a sign of things to come? We're saying the latter. You see, Busch has had an excellent 2022 campaign already with 11 different top-10 finishes. Him earning a third career victory at Sonoma is very reasonable!
