2022 Goodyear 400 Preview

The Darlington Raceway in South Carolina will host the Goodyear 400 — it’s the first of two races this year at the famed track. Darlington, or the “Track Too Tough To Be Famed” as it’s dubbed, is a favorite of NASCAR fans, drivers, and bettors. The biggest thing to note when previewing the Goodyear 400 is the old racing surface in Darlington and how the Next-Gen car will perform under those conditions.

Honestly, there’s no telling since this is the first time the track is being run this year. Historically speaking, Darlington has always been on the unpredictable side. Now? Even more so. That doesn’t mean you should skip betting on it, however. It just means you should diversify your bets to win — not go all-in on a driver or two.

Unpredictability has been the theme of the 2022 season up to this point, thanks to the introduction of the Next Gen. Former Cup Series champions such as Kevin Harvick, Martin Truex Jr., Brad Keselowski, and Kurt Busch are still winless as a frame of reference. We’d expect unpredictability to remain the case until repeat tracks start hosting events.

In the Cup Series standings, Chase Elliott leads the way despite only one outright victory. His 418 points is outpacing runner-up Ryan Blaney (368) and third-place Will Byron (353). To his credit, Byron has taken two checkered flags this year, making him one of two drivers with multiple victories in 2022 (the other is Ross Chastain).

Best Bets To Win 2022 Goodyear 400

We said it earlier, but we’ll say it again: don’t just bet one driver to win the Goodyear 400. NASCAR, unlike Formula 1 that’s also racing stateside on Mother’s Day, is full of parity (not the same two drivers winning back and forth). So please, if you care about making money, place three or so bets, the bare minimum, for your online betting strategy. If you’re stuck on who to back with a bet, then we have some drivers top of mind:

Kyle Busch

With three top-5 finishes and an outright victory, Busch has adapted well to NASCAR’s car changes so far — especially for being one of the “old guys” on the circuit. We’d expect that to continue in Darlington, a track he’s awfully familiar with. Heck, it might be his best track in the whole circuit.

When Busch isn’t crashing in Darlington, he’s almost always in the “thick” of it. He has an average finish of 6.9 in seven incident-free races here since 2016. Only one of those finishes was worse than eighth too. Busch just needs to avoid costly accidents, but if he can, expect him to contend for a win.

Denny Hamlin

Alright, we all know Hamlin has had a season to forget so far. Despite winning one race, Hamlin has been a non-factor the whole year, hence his 23rd ranking in the standings. But if he’s ever to get out of this rut, one would think Darlington might be the place.

Simply put, he’s dominated at this speedway most of his career. Hamlin owns four won victories at Darlington (the most recent coming last fall), and has an average finish of seventh in 19 career Cup races at the circuit. He’s worth taking a flyer bet on despite the mostly down 2022 season.

Erik Jones

Alright, with the way the NASCAR season has gone, it’s not a bad idea to take a few longshot bets. In the field, we love Jones’ +5000 betting line. Love because Jones has put together too-10 finishes in two straight races. Heck, he probably should’ve won at ‘Dega but was lapped by Chastain in the final lap. Jones has a lot of momentum and that’s certainly worth something when betting. Take a chance on Jones here!
