Should Norway be the Favorite to Win Most Total Medals?

Norway (-150) entered the initial market as ultra-heavy favorites to win the most medals at the 2022 Beijing Olympics. They earned the honor at the 2018 games, winning 10 pole-position medallions than second-place Germany (+2500), and seemed as if they were poised for a dominant repeat.

And yet, their market has shifted early on at the 2022 Olympics. The ROC (+125), which is actually just Russian athletes, has exploded onto the scene and taken the early lead in the total medal count. Many are even predicting they or the United States (+500) will finish with more top-three placements than Norway.

We are not quite convinced that Norway has fallen off. For starters, they only trail the ROC by one total medal at this writing, and the Beijing Olympics have yet to reach the events in which Norway is the most talented.

Official Prediction for Most Total Medals Won at 2022 Olympics

Select bettors may be tempted to roll with Austria (+5000) or the Netherlands (+250) because of how high they rank on the medal board—fourth place—and how enticing their odds remain. Resist that urge.

There is currently a five-way tie for fourth place in the medal count. If you want to invest in one of these countries, we suggest the United States or Canada (+1300), both of whom were on the early radar and have yet to reach their strongest events.

With all of that said, we find it difficult to go against Norway at the moment. The ROC looms large, but with so many figure skating and skiing events left, the reigning champion in this category has the inside track on repeat. And we recommend jumping on them before their odds shoot back toward unbeatable-favorite territory.

OSB Prediction: Norway (-150)

Will Any Country Catch the ROC's Gold Medal Count?

Below are the latest betting odds for which country will win the most gold medals at the 2022 Olympics in Beijing. Remember, this is talking about first-place medals specifically. Silver and bronze finishes do not count towards the tally:

Too many people make the mistake of assuming the overall medal leader is also most likely to lead the Olympics in gold medals. That's just not the case. It wasn't in 2018 when Germany (+2500) earned the honor, and we don't expect it to be this year.

There's a reason the overall leader, in Norway (+1000) isn't billed as the gold medal favorite. While they are teeming with pole-position candidates in many events, they lack athletes who are considered locks to take first place. Sure, there are some exceptions, but oddsmakers tend to favor more top-heavy collections of individual-sport athletes, such as the ROC (-250).

That doesn't mean no one can catch them just because they have the early lead. But they're ahead by multiple gold medals at this juncture. That's hard to do, and it deserves real consideration.

Prediction for Most Gold Medals Won at 2022 Olympics

Believe it or not, we do expect the ROC to fall from their present top position. There are just too many variables impacting them, and they aren't particularly deep with talent in the remaining outdoor and non-mixed events.

Consider taking Canada (+1300) instead. They are neck and neck with the gold medal leaderboard as it stands, and they have the opportunity to win multiple first-place honors in team sports like curling and hockey when looking at the men's and women's tournaments.

OSB Prediction: Canada (+1300)
