Shi Yuqi favored to beat Loh Kean Yew in 2023 Denmark Open Badminton

The 2023 Denmark Open has been blown wide open with a host of top seeds getting dumped out in the opening two rounds. The highest seed remaining in the competition is Anthony Sinisuka Ginting, and his biggest rival for the title is Shi Yuqi, who takes on Loh Kean Yew in his last-eight showdown today. And this is the match we are focussing on in our latest Badminton betting picks.

  • What; 2023 Denmark Open Badminton
  • Who; Shi Yuqi (-125) vs. Loh Kean Yew (-110)
  • Where; Arena Fyn, Odense, Denmark
  • Competition Dates; Tuesday, October 17th - Sunday, October 22nd

The Denmark Open is one of the biggest events on the BWF World Tour. The event also has plenty of history, as it is the second oldest competition on the Badminton roster. You need to go back to 1936 to find the first year the event was staged.

Denmark is a Badminton country. The Danes have a great record in this event, with Denmark’s men winning their category a record 35 times. China is the closest country to Denmark for wins in the men’s category. They have won the event 12 times.

The event is also a Super 750 competition. Only Super 1000 Badminton events hold higher importance in the Badminton world. As one of the biggest events, the event has good prize money, along with plenty of ranking points towards qualifying for the end-of-year Badminton World Tour Finals.

Top seed Axelsen out

Denmark’s Viktor Axelsen came into this week as the number one seed and the betting favorite to regain the title he first won in 2021. Unfortunately for the Dane, he was forced to pull out of his last 16 match against Lee Zii Jia on Thursday, with Lee getting a walkover to the last eight, where he will meet Kenta Nishimoto.

Axelsen was the -800 betting favorite to defeat Lee (+450) in what was likely to be a comfortable victory for the Danish top seed.

This is a huge blow to the Danish world number one as he would have had high ambitions to win his home event for the second time in three years. This all leaves the way clear for second seed Anthony Sinisuka Ginting and sixth seed Shi Yuqi.

Shi Yuqi (-125) vs. Loh Kean Yew (-110)

The route to the last eight

Shi Yuqi has had to work hard to get to this stage. Okay, round one wasn’t so difficult. Here he defeated Ng Ka Long 21-13, 3-0. Ng Ka had to retire in the second set.

But the second round was anything but a walkover. Kantaphon Wangcharoen pushed Yuqi all the way. The match was decided in a third set, with Yuqi winning by 21 points to 18.

Loh Kean Yew has had to battle hard to get to the last eight in Odense. In the opening round, the Singaporean was drawn to play the third seed, Kodai Naraoka. The match was a classic. The number three seed took the opening set 21-19. But Kean Yew wasn’t dispirited. He fought back to take the second set 21-6 and then won a close third set 21-19.

Things weren’t much easier in the second round when Kean Yew came up against home favorite Anders Antonsen. Although this was a two-set match, they were tough ones that went all the way. Eventually, Loh Kean Yew won the match 21-19 21-19.

Our Picks

This is one hard match to pick. Shi Yuki is the defending champion and had to overcome Kantaphon Wangcharoen in the second round to get to this stage. But his opponent, Loh Kean Yew, has had his work cut out to get this far, beating the number three seed on his way.

Purely on form, it is so hard to pick. Both men have had to work incredibly hard to get to this stage, especially Kean Yew, and this is why we are siding with the underdog. We make Loh Kean Yew our pick to win on the money line.
