On the weekend that Cinco de Mayo is celebrated the two Mexicans will go toe-to-toe in one of boxing's best-known venues in what is set to be an exciting night of action in the Nevada desert.
Canelo is the guy who has been there, done it, and got the t-shirt. It feels like he has been around forever - despite the Mexican only being 33 years old. Munguía is an exciting power puncher. At just 26 years of age, he will be hoping youth trumps experience as he looks to defeat pound-for-pound great Álvarez and shake up the boxing world.

Canelo Álvarez Career Breakdown
Saul Álvarez has a professional boxing record of 60-2-2. Canelo has won 39 of his 60 fights by knockout, with 21 decided by the judges’ scorecards. His two defeats both came by decision.
It’s hard to believe that Canelo has had that many fights when you consider that he will only be 34 when he celebrates his next birthday in July.
He is coming into the Munguía showdown off the back of three unanimous decision wins over Gennady Golovkin, John Ryder, and Jermell Charlo. The win over Charlo is the most recent, with the fight having taken place in September 2023.
The three-fight winning streak came after only the second defeat Canelo has suffered in his career. That loss came against Dmitry Bivol in May 2022. But that fight has to be put into perspective. Canelo had to step up a weight division to get the fight. And Bival has been the light heavyweight champion since 2017.
Despite this, Bival still went into the fight as a huge betting underdog. But on this occasion, the bookmakers got it wrong, as the bigger man beat the smaller one.
Jaime Munguía Career Breakdown
Jaime Munguía has a pro-fight record of 43-0. Of his 43 wins, 34 have come by knockout, with just nine requiring the scorecards.
Munguía is only 27. Like Canelo, he started his professional career at an early age, turning pro in 2013. He is a former light middleweight champion, a belt he defended five times before vacating to move up to middleweight at the start of 2020.

In his most recent fight, Munguía defeated John Ryder in Arizona in January with a ninth-round TKO win. The win was the perfect warm-up ahead of the biggest fight of his career to date.
Canelo Álvarez vs. Jaime Munguía Picks and Predictions
Is it too simple to use the two fighters' contests against John Ryder as a measuring stick? Maybe. But you can't ignore the fights.
Ryder never looked like beating Canelo. At times the Brit was more looking to survive. But the fact that Canelo has not stopped an opponent in his last four contests has seen some asking, is this the start of the end for the current pound-for-pound best?
In stark contrast, Jaime Munguía got Ryder out of there early, finishing the game Londoner in the ninth, in what was to be the unlucky Brit's last fight before retirement. This was only the second time Ryder was stopped in his 39-fight career.
We feel that Munguía has a chance. But Canelo has too much guile and ring craft. In a couple of years, we may reverse this pick. But in the here and now, we make Saul Álvarez our betting pick to win the fight.
