In one of the biggest head-scratchers out there, it's hard to believe that legal sports betting is still not allowed in the state of California. This is something that lawmakers and officials have been working to change in recent years, but there just hasn't been any luck there. However, it's important to note that the California tribes are already shifting the sports betting focus to 2028. Will history end up being made then?
This is what local sports fans sure are hoping for. It wasn't long ago that two sports betting bills were placed on the November ballot, but in a stunning turn of events, both failed by a landslide. Those initiatives pinned the tribes against some major sportsbooks, which really felt like it set things up to fail. Now, though, there's hope that 2028 will finally be the year where things get across the line.
In order for that to potentially happen, the right kind of sports bill needs to be put in place for everyone to agree on. This is going to be a focus for the California tribes moving forward, as they are going to want to avoid past mistakes. Recently at a conference in San Diego, the California Nations Indian Gaming Association made it more than clear that the efforts are going to be put in place for 2028 to be when things get across the line. Will that end up being the case?
"That’s the goal, but we’ll see,” CNIGA Chairman James Siva said via a report. “We’re still walking the path and doing the work. We’ve been working behind closed doors, a lot of tribal meetings with ideas and concepts. It has taken us a lot of time to get here, and now tribes are more comfortable talking about it in public.”
After playing the previous three Super Bowls in states with legal sports betting, the upcoming SB LX in Santa Clara, California, is set to be the first of three played in states without legal sportsbooks, followed by LXI outside Los Angeles and LXII in Atlanta

California sports fans continue to be frustrated there's no legal betting
It goes without saying here, but California sports fans continue to be frustrated there's no legal betting options. If you take a look at the state on its own, there are so many great sports teams both at the pro and college level. In the pros, if betting was legal, you'd always have people checking out the NBA betting odds, best NFL sportsbooks and much more. The same can be said for the college level, as there are always some tremendous athletes.
The issue that officials are running into as well is that illegal activity continues to run rampant all over the state. People are finding ways to make bets behind closed doors, which is an ongoing issue. Whether it be through an off-shore account or an illegal bookie, sports bets are still being made in California, which should not continue. The need for regulated betting must come in, which is where the tribes want to step in.
As for legal betting action, allow us to remind you that the sportsbooks we work with at Online Sports Betting offer up fantastic, daily betting odds. At the same time, there are also some pretty great bonuses and promotions for people to take a look at. Whether it be in the fall, winter, spring or summer, there are awesome deals around the clock throughout the year and there's no better time to sign up than now.
Meanwhile for the betting push in California, local citizens indeed are getting tired of the runaround with things. The fact that it's 2026 and we're likely going to have to wait until 2028 at the earliest to see things progress is a bit frustrating, but it's understandable that the tribes are going to want to get things right this time around. The pressure is on for them to deliver, but it's unknown at this time if that's going to happen or not.
California just missed out on a big sports betting opportunity with the Super Bowl
Need a reminder of why things need to be acted upon soon? Well, California just missed out on a big sports betting opportunity with the Super Bowl arriving in the state. Each and every year, Super Bowl betting takes center stage in February and this year was no different. However, with things not being legal in California, it stung, with things only made worse with the big game being at the 49ers' stadium in Santa Clara.
Had legal sports betting been an option, people in the area could have placed their bets before the big game. With the game being in California, it only added to the buzz for the football fans in the state. However, if people wanted to place legal bets, they had to leave state lines - this is why Las Vegas is a popular destination for people during the NFL Playoffs.
This is something everyone must keep in mind as the push for betting continues to grow. There are still people who are opposed to it, but if the betting is regulated and the state can tax things, it'd be a win-win for everyone. Once a bill is finalized, the goal will be for the majority of people in California to support it. The state truly can't afford to wait too much longer to get the green light for this.
