There's been a bump in things when it comes to legal online sports betting, but that doesn't mean good California betting news has come in. Things are still a bit up in the air there, but with doors being open later, could the state go ahead and adjust accordingly? Maybe, as California would be wise to follow Wisconsin's sports betting plan. Why is that? Because Wisconsin just moved forward with online betting, with in-person options already on the table.
This is major for Wisconsin, as Governor Tony Evers took things into his own hands, signed an online sports betting bill and now he's waiting on the local tribes to get their heads together and come up with the best plan possible to move forward. Now, California could take a look into things too here, as Governor Gavin Newsom and officials have been looking at options to move forward, but nothing has gone right.
It wasn't long ago too that there were two different sports betting bills on the ballot in California, including one that was drawn up and ran by the local tribes, while the other one was powered by some heavy hitters in the sportsbook world. Both of those bills failed miserably, and nothing but bad news has followed. So, what does this mean for the push ahead? That's tough to say, as things remain a bit in flux.
In terms of how Wisconsin could put things into play for California, it might be smart for Newsom to look into things. However, with Newsom on his way out and not available for another term, it could be on the next governor of the state to try and adopt things. California remains looking for sports betting answers, but it might be time to look for outside help for inspiration. With that said, Wisconsin could be a great example of things.
Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers (D) has signed tribal online sports betting bill AB 601 into law.
The legislation will give Wisconsin tribes control over the state's online sports betting market.
It remains to be seen if any major sports betting operators will enter into the market.

The sooner California can get things figured out with sports betting, the better
It goes without saying, but the sooner California can get things figured out with sports betting, the better. As we've written about before here on Online Sports Betting, countless eyes are on 2028 as the year when things can potentially get over the line. Again, there are plenty of complications there, as nothing is even close to being set in stone or finalized. As of this writing, there aren't even any sports betting bills that are looking promising.
Soon enough, though, that's going to have to change if people really want 2028 to be the year when things are given the green light. Until then, people in the state are going to continue to use offshore methods, while also taking advantage of the prediction markets that are available. Just like Wisconsin and other states where legal online betting is yet to launch, California is also dealing with people placing bets that way.
This includes NFL futures bets on how things might end up next season. The Los Angeles Rams hold the top NFL betting odds to win the title next season, which of course is going to draw plenty of interest for people in the state. With LA also holding the Chargers, people will keep on placing bets. It's fair to assume that interest in the 49ers will also be on the rise, but things won't change there in a positive way unless regulated betting is put in place.
The Dodgers will keep on driving MLB betting in California as well
In a different sport, the fact of the matter is that the Dodgers will keep on driving betting in California as well. The Dodgers have won the World Series in back to back years and now they're looking for a three-peat. Shohei Ohtani also holds the best MLB betting odds to win the NL MVP.
Between those two futures outcomes, it's easy to see why people in California are racing to place their bets on the futures outcomes they can on prediction markets. This is only going to continue throughout the rest of the season and most definitely after the All-Star break as the odds continue to change.
Then once the MLB postseason arrives, we all know that sports betting is going to jump once again. That will come in the fall, right before the heart of the NFL schedule arrives. Both betting options for those sports will be keyed in on, including illegal options. This is something Newsom and Co. no doubt have to keep in mind - as do the local tribes.
