Back the Netherlands and Belgium for 2023 Darts World Cup glory

The 2023 PDC World Cup of Darts takes place in Germany later this week. 40 nations will be fighting it out in an expanded competition for the top prize of £80,000 (approximately $100,000) and the title of World Champions. Here we tell you who we think will win in our latest darts betting picks.

  • What; 2023 PDC World Cup of Darts
  • When; Thursday 15th - Sunday 18th June, 2023
  • Where; Eissporthalle, Frankfurt, Germany

This is the 13th edition of the PDC World Cup of Darts. To give it its proper name, it is also known as the My Diesel Claim World Cup of Darts, for sponsorship reasons.

Australia are the defending champions, having defeated Wales at the same venue 12 months ago. The win was Australia’s first ever, and they also became only the fifth nation to ever lift the trophy. In winning the 2022 trophy, Australia joined an elite club that only includes England (4 wins), Netherlands (4 wins), Scotland (2 wins), and Wales (1 win).

In this year's competition, each competing nation will have two players. Both players will play matches in the doubles format, with singles matches dropped from this year’s edition.

There are four seeded nations, England, Netherlands, Wales, and Scotland, based on the PDC Order of Merit. The four seeded nations won’t enter the competition until the 2nd Round.

Before the introduction of the four seeded nations, the other 36 nations will be competing in 12 groups of three in the Group Stages (1st Round). The group winners will then join the four seeds in the second stage.

Match lengths will be:-

  • Group stages; Best of seven legs
  • Second round, quarter, and semi-finals; Best of fifteen legs
  • Final; Best of nineteen legs

Betting to win the 2023 World Cup of Darts

Gerwyn Price has been the headline act in the world of darts in recent weeks. And it’s Price’s Wales that are the favorites to win the World Cup of Darts with the best online darts betting sites. Price will be partnered by Jonny Clayton, and they are +160 to win the competition for Wales for the second time.

Following Wales in the betting is England at +325, with the Netherlands at +400, and Scotland at +750. The four seeds are way ahead of the rest of the field, with Germany next at +1600, and Belgium at +2000.

Now let’s take a closer look at the nations with the best chances of winning the competition.

Wales +160

Gerwyn Price and Jonny Clayton are two of the in-form players in world darts, and both will be looking to win the world cup for Wales for a second time.

Both men recently made it to the finals night of the Premier League, but unfortunately, neither could stop MVG from winning the title. Wales will be a threat, and it’s easy to see why the bookmakers are making them favorites.

England +325

England is represented by the current world champion Michael Smith and former world champ, Rob Cross. The duo is the number one seed, but the second favorite with the bookmakers.

Rob Cross secured his place alongside Smith when he defeated Luke Humpries in the final of the European Darts Grand Prix. The winner of that match automatically got the second spot in the team.

Netherlands +400

MVG and Danny Noppert will be representing the Netherlands for the second time. They haven't had the best of times playing together previously. In 2020, the duo made it to the quarter-finals, where they lost 2-1 to Germany.

This year Noppert is up to eight in the world, and his rise in the rankings makes him a more than capable partner for Michael van Gerwen. MVG has shown again just what a big game player he is when he won the 2023 Premier League Darts, where he thrashed Gerwyn Price in the final. The Dutch will be a threat.

Scotland +750

Peter Wright and Gary Anderson won this competition for Scotland in 2019 and will represent their nation again this year. Gary Anderson has been sliding down the ranking lately, and Wright had a disaster in the 2023 Premier League.

Even so, these are canny experienced operators who are well capable of troubling anyone. They are probably +750 based on recent form, and that’s fair enough. But if they can get on a roll, then who knows?

Belgium +2000

We think the Belgian duo of Dimitri Van den Bergh and Kim Huybrechts are overpriced. Okay, so Van den Bergh didn’t have a great Premier League, but the fact he made it there says he’s a top-quality performer.

As for Huybrechts, he’s seen better days on the oche, but like the Scottish pairing, he’s not to be underestimated.

Our picks

Based on value for money, we’re going for a win for continental Europe.

After seeing how Michael van Gerwen performed in the Premier League Darts final, we believe if he can get his nation to the final, then alongside the improving Danny Noppert, the Dutch will be a real genuine threat, so we are making them our opening pick to win.

Alongside the Dutch, we’re also going for Belgian. As we’ve just pointed out, Van den Bergh and Huybrechts look way overpriced, and at +2000, we make Belgium our second pick to win the 2023 World Cup of Darts.
