Drama when it comes to Florida betting isn't new, but with things legalized in the state now thanks to the 30-year pact between The Seminole Tribe and Ron DeSantis, who expected this? Earlier this month, news broke that a new lawsuit in Florida has The Seminole Tribe going after DraftKings. In case you missed it, DraftKings launched a new prediction market for people to use, which of course includes sports betting operations.
Because of this, Florida citizens have been taking advantage of this, placing futures sports bets via that particular prediction market. With The Seminole Tribe handling all sports betting for the state, on paper, it seems like DraftKings may be a bit out of bounds here. However, with prediction markets as a whole being operated at the Federal level, an argument can be made that DraftKings has done nothing wrong. This is currently the issue that has rocked Florida as a whole.
“Every wager that (DraftKings) now accept through their illegal sportsbook siphons away revenue that funds both the Tribe’s and Florida’s public programs and government services; diverts betting from Florida’s regulated system into an underground, unregulated, and outlawed book; and deprives the Floridian who places such a bet of the consumer protections guaranteed by Florida law,” ABC6 in South Florida reported that part of the lawsuit states.
As you can see from that statement, it's clear that the tribe is not happy, as it feels like potential revenue is being taken away from the state. At this time, it's unknown when a final decision will be made on whether or not DraftKings' prediction market will continue to be allowed in the state. It will be interesting to see if things are flipped here, but until the call comes in, people in Florida will continue to use DraftKings if they wish.
BREAKING NEWS:
The Seminole Tribe of Florida filed suit in Broward Circuit Court against @DraftKings and CEO @JasonDRobins, alleging that DraftKings is operating an illegal sports betting business in Florida in violation of state law and the terms of the 2021 Gaming Compact between the State of Florida and the Seminole Tribe.

Governor Ron DeSantis also is not happy with DraftKings being used in Florida
As you might have been able to guess, Governor Ron DeSantis is not happy with DraftKings being used in Florida. Can anyone blame him for this? Again, DeSantis and The Seminole Tribe reached an agreement on their 30-year plan. This gave the tribe full authority on sports betting in the state. Now, this loophole with the prediction markets is being used by DraftKings. Since things are not regulated at a state-by-state level, it complicates things, which DeSantis fully understands.
“The question is that if you have a certain regime on sports gaming, and then the prediction markets come in, does that fall under that or do they just get to do it?” DeSantis said via his interview with ABC6. “Ultimately, you are going to see federal decisions, probably at appeals and higher. Then I think you’ll probably see Congress do some things with respect to how that’s going.”
Sooner rather than later, it feels like there could end up being a ton of changes when it comes to the prediction markets. Several states have already moved forward with bans, though even more lawsuits have been filed. Only time will tell if The Seminole Tribe regains full control of sports betting in Florida, but things are certainly a bit unclear right now.
NFL betting is on the rise as expected in Florida
Looking at things from a more positive view, NFL betting is on the rise as expected in Florida. With a full month of action under way, we have seen several teams improve their Super Bowl betting odds, including the Jacksonville Jaguars. While the Jags aren't expected to win it all this year, quarterback Trevor Lawrence has looked great.
On top of that, second-year cornerback and wide receiver Travis Hunter seems to be getting better with each game. That's the good news. The bad news is that in terms of other local teams, the Bucs and Dolphins have looked a bit rough. Injuries have seriously hurt both teams, which is incredibly disappointing.
Despite that, people in the state are still enjoying placing online bets through the Hard Rock App (operated by The Seminole Tribe) and also placing bets at in-person sportsbooks as well. This is only going to continue as the regular season progresses, and then things will of course reach a different level this winter once the playoffs arrive too.
