Lewis Hamilton for a podium finish in the 2023 Canadian F1 Grand Prix

is Round 9 of the F1 season sees the drivers head to North America for the 2023 Canadian Grand Prix. Once again, Max Verstappen is the favorite, with the world champion-elect looking for his fourth successive win of the season this weekend. Here, we tell you if he’s going to achieve it, with our latest Formula 1 betting picks.

  • What; 2023 Canadian Grand Prix - Round 9
  • Where; Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, Montreal, Canada
  • When; Sunday, June 18th, 2023
  • Time; 2 pm ET
  • Laps; 70
  • Race Length; 305.270 km

The F1 roster has headed over to North America for Round 9. We were in the middle of the European section of the season, but a visit to the legendary Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal is where we are heading this weekend.

The past three races have seen Max Verstappen take a stranglehold on the 2023 Drivers Championship. The Red Bull driver has now won three races in succession, and with that, Verstappen has now built up a 53-point lead over his teammate, Sergio Perez.

This has seen the best Formula 1 online betting sites make Verstappen -5000 to win the championship for a third successive year. Sergio Perez is next at +3300, with Lewis Hamilton at +6600, and Fernando Alonso at +10000.

Betting without Verstappen

Elsewhere, and in the betting to win the drivers world championship without Max Verstappen, we have seen some significant movement. Ahead of Round 8 of the championship, Sergio Perez was favorite at -500, with Fernando Alonso at +700, and Lewis Hamilton at +1200.

After an improved performance by the Mercedes car at Barcelona, which saw both Hamilton and his teammate George Russell both on the podium, the betting now reads Perez at -350, Lewis Hamilton at +300, Fernando Alonso at +850, and Charles Leclerc at +10000.

That represents a big shift in the betting for Mercedes on the back of one race. It says that the upgrades to the car are a step in the right direction, although they are still a long way away from catching Max Verstappen.

It does weaken the position of Sergio Perez though. In the early stages of this season, Perez was looking like he might challenge Verstappen for the championship. Now he finds himself under pressure just to finish second behind the Dutchman.

Betting to win the Canadian Grand Prix

So, here we are again. It’s not a case of who is favorite. It's simply a question of what are Max Verstappen's odds to win this week. And the answer is, this weekend Verstappen is -300.

Behind the championship leader is his teammate, Sergio Perez at +700. And then we have the improving Lewis Hamilton at +1200, with Fernando Alonso dropping from his usual position of third favorite to fourth favorite. Alonso is +1600.

Behind the Spaniard, comes George Russell at +2000, Charles Leclerc at +3300, and Carlos Sainz at +5000. It would appear the Ferraris have both been written off.

Our 2023 Canadian Grand Prix Picks

Before we get onto our Canadian Grand Prix picks, let’s quickly recap what happened here 12 months ago.

There are no prizes for guessing that Max Verstappen won the race. He was also in pole position, although the fastest lap went to Carlos Sainz. Elsewhere, and on the podium, Sainz was second and Lewis Hamilton was third.

We doubt any of that will have much bearing on this year’s race. But it does tell us Red Bull can win at the circuit. So, with Sergio Perez seemingly well off the pace in recent weeks, this all points to yet another win for Max Verstappen.

But if you don’t want to bet on Max to win at -300, then fear not. Because we’ve checked out some different betting markets, and come up with some alternative picks.

Is Hamilton a threat this weekend?

First up, in the betting to finish in the top 3, BetOnline has Verstappen at -500, Perez at -200, and Alonso at -140. When you consider that Lewis Hamilton is the third favorite to win the race, you may have to wonder why he’s the fourth favorite in the betting to finish in the top 3.

Either way, we’re not bothered. Lewis Hamilton came second in Spain two weeks ago, and at odds of +100 for a top 3 finish in Canada, we’re happy to make that one of our alternative picks.

And sticking with Lewis Hamilton, could he take advantage of a Red Bull mishap? If Lewis Hamilton’s car is improving, and if he’s going to be +1000 or above for the next few weeks, he could be worth backing.

The Red Bull will fail to win one week soon, surely? Verstappen could have some bad misfortune, such as coming together with another car, or there could even be a breakdown in team strategy.

As Hamilton may now have Sergio Perez in his sights, it could also be that he’s one of the best bets to take advantage of any potential mishap. He also hasn’t won a race since the 2021 F1 season, so if nothing else he is surely due a win. So this week we’re placing a little side wager on Lewis Hamilton to win at +1200.
