The current situation ahead of the Miami Grand Prix

The first Grand Prix on this circuit was held in 2022, making this the third edition. Max Verstappen has won both and is looking for a hat-trick of wins this Sunday. And with four wins from the opening five races of the current season, the Dutchman looks on course to claim another victory in Florida.

Verstappen’s latest win came in Round 5 in China, where he cruised to first place on the podium despite the interruptions of two safety cars, which allowed the field to close the gap on the world champion on two occasions.

Lando Norris finished in second place. The McLaren driver took advantage of the safety car to pit, a move which saw him come out ahead of Sergio Perez, who was unable to reclaim second position on the track and had to settle for third.

Performing disappointingly in China was the Ferrari’s of Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz. For the first time this season, neither driver made the podium, and the two also clashed in both the Sprint on Saturday and the Grand Prix on Sunday.

Saturday’s incident in the Sprint prompted Ferrari Team Principal Fred Vasseur to sit down with both drivers after the race. The chats didn’t work, as the spat continued into Sunday’s race, where Leclerc nearly took out his teammate on the opening lap.

Nevertheless, Ferrari are introducing upgrades to their car for the weekend in Florida. Charles Leclerc has described them as game-changing, so it will be interesting to see if he’s right.

All the above sets us up nicely for the weekend, where there is another Sprint race on Saturday and then a further 57 laps in the Grand Prix on Sunday.

Who is the favorite to win the 2024 Miami Grand Prix?

Max Verstappen is the -700 betting favorite to win the 2024 Miami Grand Prix.

The triple-world champion started the first race of the season as a favorite at -325 in Bahrain. His odds have shortened gradually over the season, to where we now find him at an unbackable -700 to win the race in the USA. The rest of the field is +450 to win the race.

Second in the betting to win in Miami is Sergio Perez at +1100. The Red Bull No.2 driver was +900 in Shanghai, but after only managing third, has slipped in the betting for this weekend’s race.

Sergio Perez started in the Pole Position here 12 months ago. The main reason for this rare success was Verstappen not being able to set a time due to a Red Flag. Nevertheless, Verstappen still managed to beat his teammate to the checkered flag - despite starting from ninth on the grid.

Third in the betting to win in Miami is Charles Leclerc at +1800. Leclerc finished ahead of teammate Carlos Sainz for the first time this season in China. And as we’ve already mentioned, there are issues between the two drivers, with neither looking prepared to concede ground.

Sainz is +2000 to win his second race of the season, with Lando Norris also on +2000. Lewis Hamilton and George Russell are both +4000.

Our 2024 Miaimi Grand Prix betting picks

We couldn’t justify backing Verstappen to win at -500 in China, so we certainly can’t recommend backing him to win at -700 in Miami.

He probably will win. It’s a case of whether you want to back him at those odds.

For our alternative picks, we are backing Charles Leclerc this weekend.

The Monégasque driver will be annoyed by his run-ins with teammate Carlos Sainz in China and hopefully fired up for Miami.

Along with Ferrari upgrades, we expect a big weekend from Leclerc. Therefore, we are backing him to finish on the podium in the Grand Prix at +137 and to also win the Sprint at +2000.
