Could 2026 finally be the year that Georgia sports betting ends up getting legalized? A handful of state legislators seem to think so.

“State lawmakers could allow Georgia voters to decide if they want to legalize gambling. After years of debate, lawmakers are pretty sure it would take a constitutional amendment to legalize it in Georgia. That would require the approval of Georgia voters, but only if lawmakers allow that vote. Every year, we ask state lawmakers if this is the year Georgia legalizes gambling, and this year is no different. And every year, the measure fails in the general assembly. But at the final hearing of the House Gaming Committee on Thursday, both Republicans and Democrats seemed to be on the same page.

“Watkinsville Republican Marcus Wiedower is the committee chair and thinks, maybe it’s time. ‘In the state of Georgia, we’re all going to have to decide, ultimately, let the voters decide if they want to participate in it, but I think, within a legal framework, that would be proper,’ Wiedower told Channel 2’s Richard Elliot. Casino gambling and horse racing may have a tougher road, but there is a chance lawmakers could support legalizing online sports betting. It already has the support of all the major Atlanta sports teams.”

It comes as no surprise that Georgia pro sports teams support legalized gambling. They stand to make millions per year, if not more, from various partnerships and potential sportsbooks located inside or around their venues.

Harmony between both sides of the political aisle is a bigger deal.

Republicans May Hold Key to the Future of Sports Betting in The Peach State

Historically, Republicans are more likely to oppose Georgia sports betting. If they are softening on that stance, the next measure has a much better chance of making it onto the November 2026 voter ballot.

Of course, we still need to see this bipartisan alignment in action. The method of legalization, in particular, will be a bellwether for what’s to come. Channel 2’s report suggests that members from both parties are resigned to Georgia sports betting requiring a constitutional amendment.

This is a pretty significant departure from years past. Many supporters preferred to try legalizing Georgia sports gambling without traveling down this path. The bar for support among policymakers without an issue going to state voters for their approval is higher and, thus, more difficult.

Not surprisingly, this alternative route never gained true traction. In fact, support among policymakers for Georgia sports betting seemed to decline while this option was being peddled.

The expectation is that this would again present itself as a roadblock in 2026. But if Channel 2’s reporting is accurate, state legislature members are on the same page. That by itself is seismic progress.

Given the latest update, many will naturally want to know when Georgia sports betting might launch. The answer is inexact, but the gist of it is: Not for a while.

Assuming a sports betting measure makes it onto the November 2026 ballot and gets approved by voters, sportsbooks in Georgia may not open their doors for another year or more.

Look no further than the recent legalization of sports betting in Missouri as proof. Voters narrowly approved a constitutional measure to green light sports betting back in November 2024. The Show Me State will not be launching operations until December 2025—around 13 months later.

Now, context is important here. Extra steps needed to be taken to approve the Missouri sports betting bill. The vote wound up being that close. A more decided victory for Georgia sports betting could expedite the process.

Even with that in mind, though, operations would be unlikely to roll out before the end of 2026. Regulators will likely push for a summer launch, so the state can capitalize on the increase in NFL betting. So perhaps August 2026 would be possible.

For now we are getting ahead of the game. The next Georgia sports betting bill still needs to make it past the House and Senate—and then The Peach State’s voters themselves.
