We’re a month and change away from the end of the MLB regular season. This is when MLB awards like the MVP or Cy Young will be accounted for (postseason play doesn’t count). With time ticking, now is the time to place your bets on the Cy Young winners in both the AL and NL. We have free betting advice on it so keep on reading!
NL Cy Young Betting Pick
Let’s begin in the National League. As it stands, here’s how the best MLB betting sites have the award pegged:
Player | ![]() | ![]() | ![]() |
---|---|---|---|
Paul Skenes | -475 | -475 | -475 |
Cristopher Sanchez | +275 | +275 | +275 |
Zack Wheeler | +2000 | +2000 | +2000 |
Matthew Boyd | +2200 | +2200 | +2200 |
It’s pretty much down to either Skenes or Wheeler here. The two players have exchanged leads atop the betting odds a few times this year, but right now, it’s Skenes' award to lose if betting odds are to be believed. But here’s the thing: Skenes just got roughed up in his past start against Milwaukee, who tagged him for four runs in four innings.
However, it might just be the Brewers — not Skenes. The Pirates’ division rival has proven to be a thorn in Skene’s side all year long. Get this, Skenes’ ERA is 5.79 in three starts against the Brew Crew this season. Against every other opponent? He has an astonishing ERA of 1.75 in 22 starts. It’s the latter stat which is why he’s in prime position to win the award (Skenes leads the majors with a 2.13 ERA).
Miller and Pittsburgh only play one more time the rest of this regular season. So it’s on another pitcher to overtake him for the reward, rather than bank on Skenes flaming out. Wheeler (or his teammate Sanchez) is the favorite to possibly do so. He’s 35 years old, and playing some of the best baseball of his life with a league-high 189 strikeouts.
Wheeler has placed runner-up for Cy Young twice, in 2021 and 2024. It would be a good story for the old man to get over the proverbial hump, but his stats — 2.68 ERA and a 5.1 WAR — all trail Skenes significantly. And time is running out for Wheeler to surpass ‘em.
Bet on Skenes with confidence here. No Pirates pitcher has won the award since 1990, but that streak ends this year. In only his second year, he’s somehow lived up to the enormous hype he’s carried since his college days at LSU. This kid is truly special, and he’s only 23.
Al Cy Young Betting Pick
The same thing holds true in the American League. Here too, it’s a two-man battle in the latest MLB odds, as seen below:
Player | ![]() | ![]() | ![]() |
---|---|---|---|
Tarik Skubal | -300 | -300 | -300 |
Garrett Crochet | +250 | +250 | +250 |
Nathan Eovaldi | +3000 | +3000 | +3000 |
Jacob deGrom | +5000 | +5000 | +5000 |
Detroit’s Skubal opened the season as the +300 favorite to win the Cy Young for a second straight year. Unless disaster strikes the rest of the way, he could become the first pitcher to win back-to-back AL Cy Youngs since Pedro Martinez did it for the Red Sox in 2000. Yes, it’s been a quarter of a century, which puts Skubal’s accomplishments in perspective.
But it’s not over yet. For comparison’s sake, Skubal has a 2.35 ERA, 11-3 record, 187 strikeouts, and a 0.86 WHIP in 23 starts across 145.1 innings pitched. His closest competitor in the Cy Young, Crochet, is right there with him. The Red Sox Crotchet is at a 2.48 ERA, 13-5 record, 188 strikeouts, and a 1.10 WHIP across 24 starts and 152.1 innings pitched.
Skubal is in a bit of a slump, as of late too. In his last start, the Angels hung four runs on him before he was chased out in the fifth inning. Over his last seven starts, Skubal is a meager 1-1. Now, that mark is more about the lack of run support he’s getting from his Tigers teammates, but it does give you a good reason to possibly vote elsewhere.
We think it’s worth laying a bet on Crochet. His odds +250 feel like a steal since he’s almost level with Skubal in many metrics. But more than that, Cotchet is on a hot streak. In his last start, he struck out eight and allowed just one run against Miami.
More than that, Crotchet could benefit from “narrative.” Not many believed Red Sox would be making a playoff push when the season started or when they traded All-Star Rafael Devers in June. Yet, Boston is in the wildcard right now, and Crotchet’s pitching is a huge reason why. For all these reasons, we’re throwing some money on Crotchet to spoil Skubal’s chance at history.
