The Tigers are the surprise team of the 2025 season. But let’s get one thing clear — it’s not flukey. This club is for real, and they are our priority pick to win the league.

We say that because it’s not one thing that’s carried them to an AL-best 78 wins. Flukey teams typically have one standout player or just one hot run during the season. Detroit? No such thing. They’ve been the AL’s best team pretty much wire to wire. They’re only a surprise because most experts thought they’d be a middling team during the preseason. They were wrong, of course.

But if Detroit is to run the table in the playoffs, you’d think it would be on the back of pitching. After all, October baseball is all about pitching, they say. In that case, the Tigers have the best pitcher in the whole league in Tarik Skubal. He’s on his way to another Cy Young award with a 2.32 ERA in 25 starts.

We really think the Tigers' World Series chances hinge on who’s the No. 2 starting pitcher. All-Star Casey Mize (who’s trending down since the break)? Jack Flaherty and his $25 million salary? Both have potential, but each has been up and down this season.

So yes, Detroit has questions at the starting pitcher after its ace. But every team in the AL has holes this late in the season. We just think the Tigers are the least worrying compared to other teams, hence this pick!

Houston Astros

Every year, there’s a good argument to say, “this is the year Houston finally takes a step back.” And every year — for the last decade at least — the Astros have found a way to keep winning. But being honest, their 2025 outperformance might be the most surprising. Surprising because the franchise lost three cornerstones during the offseason. Justin Verlander, Alex Bregman, and Kyle Tucker all contributed greatly to its dynasty, but left to other teams.

If the Astros’ bullpen can come close to resembling its earlier-season self, then we fully expect them to play spoilers in the playoffs.
