The Secret to Oklahoma Sports Betting Is Crystal Clear

The push to legalize Oklahoma sports betting has born little fruit for years. A rocky relationship between tribal nations and Governor Kevin Stitt is at the root of it all. It has left many to wonder how long it will take The Sooner State to join the ranks of those who have legalized sports betting.

As it turns out, the answer to this musing is pretty simple: There will be sports betting in Oklahoma soon after Stitt leaves office, something that is slated to happen in 2027.

This is not just in reference to the process, either. In fact, the debate over Oklahoma sports betting has seldom stalled out. Even as Stitt made it clear this past year that he would veto any bill to legalize sports betting, the latest legislation made it further through the House of Representatives and Senate than any of the initiatives before it.

Many are taking this to mean there’s a clear majority interest among policymakers and constituents in the legalization of Oklahoma sports betting. If the sentiments recently conveyed by two of The Sooner State’s primary candidates for governor is any indication, those people might be right.

Governor Stitt’s Replacement Seems Likely to Support Oklahoma Sports Betting

Charlse McCall and Attorney General Gentner Drumond are among the two main candidates running for Oklahoma governor in 2026. As Dacoda Wahpekech relays for ABC News 5, both seem open to the legalization of sports betting in The Sooner State:

“With next year marking Stitt's last in office, two of Oklahoma's top candidates for governor shared their views on the state's casino industry. "I've seen firsthand what the tribal nations do for our communities throughout the state of Oklahoma. We should be working together a lot better than we have been," Charles McCall, a 2026 Oklahoma gubernatorial candidate, said. Attorney General Gentner Drummond, another 2026 candidate for governor, also spoke about the issue. "I know that we have been out of step with our current governor, but 17 months from now, you're going to have an opportunity to have a governor that recognizes and appreciates the value of all of Oklahoma's 38 sovereign tribes," Drummond said.”

Frankly, this is a huge development for tribes. If one of McCall or Drummond is tapped as Stitt’s replacement, their comments on the importance of collaboration with tribes could result in the immediate passage of sports betting legislation.

Indeed, potential hangups can still bubble to the surface. Even though tribal sports betting in Oklahoma will not require a constitutional amendment, it must garner enough support among the Senate and House.

And yet, this has never once seemed like the primary issue. Stitt’s insistence of having online sports betting operators in the United States enter the market was always the biggest roadblocks. Members of the House and Senate have generally seemed perfectly content to let tribal nations have exclusivity. And yes, this includes more than a handful of members on Stitt’s own side of the political aisle.

What Would be a Realistic Timeline to Launch Sports Betting in The Sooner State?

For the most part, the answer to this question exists in opaque territory. Experts and analysts typically offer some variation of saying that sports gambling legalization is on the horizon or just around the corner. These responses rarely include a concrete timeline.

Mind you, this is for a good reason. It is impossible, at this juncture, to know for sure. But the ambiguity seemingly stems from a hope that Governor Stitt and the tribal nations will find common ground while he is still in office. That clearly is not happening. So if we throw that possibility out of the window, we can provide some real estimations.

At this point, it becomes a matter of simple math. Stitt is leaving office at the end of next year. This means a new governor will be in place prior to 2027 legislative meetings. If an Oklahoma sports betting initiative gets the stamp of approval during those discussions, the rollout can happen anytime after that.

Of course, this is not akin to predicting that Oklahoma sports betting will go live by the middle of 2027. Rollouts take time. On occasion, they can take a lot of time.

For their part, The Sooner State is in a good position to expedite any launch. They already have a tribal gambling infrastructure in place, which speeds things up by default. The Sooner State will be able to draw inspiration from a bunch of different models, all while having extensive knowledge of knowing what works, and what does not work.

All of this in mind, nobody should get too far ahead of themselves. The next Oklahoma governor needs to veer away from Stitt’s position on sports betting. While it seems likely that they will, there are no guarantees. Someone needs to be elected, sworn in and officially declare their position on Oklahoma sports betting legalization.

If we had to guess, The Sooner State will have retail sports betting by the end of 2028. The prevailing sentiment across both sides of the aisle is too favorable to attribute the current absence of it to anything other than Stitt.

Perhaps we find out about these changes, or that it is flat-out wrong. For now, though, supporters of Oklahoma sports bettors will find solace in knowing this is the closest the state has come to mapping out a definitive timeline.
