Stop us if you've heard this before, but prediction markets continue to infuriate lawmakers and officials. Recently, news broke that Congress was stepping in to try and get things halted where sports betting is not legal, and it looks like you can add another state to the list working to stop things as well. That's because Washington state has entered the sports betting battle against prediction markets, with a new lawsuit being filed.

According to a report from local outlet KUOW, an official complaint was sent to the King County Superior Court. King County is one of the most well-known counties in the state, as it's home to Seattle, the largest city in Washington. With this particular lawsuit, officials have asked the Federal Government to indeed bring betting predictions markets to an end. This of course targets Kalshi, Robinhood and others.

As things stand, sports betting is legal in Washington, but online gambling has been banned since 2006. Only in-person sports bets can be placed at an authorized casino/sportsbook. Because of this, it's no shock at all that Washington wants to make sure that these apps for the prediction markets can no longer be used inside of the state. This is a problem that is pretty widespread across the country.

For now, Kalshi remains in operation, but it's completely unknown if that's going to continue to be the case or not. In recent months, several states have been pushing against these prediction market apps, as the argument is being made that it's in clear violation of online gambling laws. This is what we're seeing in Washington betting news and it will be interesting to see what the next steps taken are going to be.

Robinhood responded to the lawsuit filed in Washington state

Not long after the news broke that this complaint had been filed, Robinhood responded to the lawsuit filed in Washington State. Robinhood has been an active presence in the prediction market community, with its services being approved by the U.S. government. That's what despite so many states claiming that what the company is doing is illegal, Robinhood doesn't seem to see things that way.

“We believe in the power of prediction markets and the important role they play at the intersection of trading, news, economics, politics, culture, and sports,” a company spokesperson said via a report from the Washington State Standard. “Every eligible customer should have access to these markets, which are federally regulated.”

On one hand, people see their point. Robinhood, Kalshi and others are federally regulated and they've been approved to operate. However, on the other side of things, there's most certainly a bit of a conflict, as these prediction markets are providing their services to states where online gambling is illegal. This has provided people with the ability to get their sports bets in, while not breaking the law.

However, in a state like Washington, online sports betting has not been made legal yet, which is why this is all a bit of a mess. The state has worked to get things approved in recent years, but nothing has been finalized and it doesn't look like too many positive steps are being taken. These prediction markets are only complicating things and if anything, they're surely causing some confusion for Washingtonians as well.

Prediction markets are impacting NFL betting in Washington

As you might have been able to guess, prediction markets are impacting NFL betting in Washington, which has only increased after this past season. As you know, the Seattle Seahawks won the Super Bowl in February and fans all over the state have wasted no time in checking the NFL sportsbooks for the latest Lombardi Trophy odds for next season. People are only going to keep checking things on a consistent basis the closer we get to the 2026 season.

Again, if you want to place a futures pick on the Seahawks and their Super Bowl betting odds, you need to do so in person at an authorized sportsbook. However, thanks to these prediction markets, the loophole indeed is there for NFL betting to be placed through an online site or app. See the problem there?

The Seahawks hold +950 NFL betting odds to repeat as the champs next year, while other prop bets are being listed online. With the NFL Draft arriving soon too, people are racing to get their wagers in, as an intriguing draft weekend is coming up. Those bets need to take place in regulated fashion through the approved locations in Washington. This is what officials in the state want, as they have just about had it with Robinhood, Kalshi and others.
