In early April, a major victory arrived for the state of Wisconsin and sports betting fans, as online options are coming. In April, Governor Tony Evers signed a new bill providing legalization for online sports betting, which is massive. However, the fact of the matter here is that despite the bill getting signed off, there's no set date for when Wisconsin's online sports betting will launch. That's the bad news right now.
However, the good news is that this is in the works and that the wheels are in motion for online options to be made available for people in the state. Why is this such a good thing for sports fans? Because for now, only in-person betting is permitted in the Badger State at authorized locations. However, the efforts for online betting have ramped up in recent years and Evers is clearly excited for things to get going down the road, as long as the local tribes work together as one.
"The real work begins today," Ever said in a statement that was released to the public. "Each of the 11 Tribes must now work diligently-and together-to shape the future of sports betting in Wisconsin. ... An approach that exacerbates long-standing inequalities among Tribal Nations is not good for Wisconsinites or Wisconsin. I will not entertain it as governor."
Again, for now, online Wisconsin betting is allowed on tribal lands that have been authorized by the Wisconsin government. However, within the next few months, the hope is that online betting will launch, which will surely lead to people placing a ton of bets on a consistent basis. While there's no announced date for the launch, the tribes will be getting hard to work ASAP to make sure no more delays arrive.
Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers (D) has signed tribal online sports betting bill AB 601 into law.
The legislation will give Wisconsin tribes control over the state's online sports betting market.
It remains to be seen if any major sports betting operators will enter into the market.

Wisconsin citizens are hopeful online betting will arrive in time for the NFL season
A quick look on social media shows that Wisconsin citizens are hopeful online betting will arrive in time for the NFL season. It goes without saying, but there are countless Green Bay Packers fans in the state, as the NFC North side is one of the most historic franchises in NFL history. Next season, the Green Bay Packers are hoping to go on a deep postseason run and flirt with a trip to the Super Bowl.
In order for that to potentially happen, quarterback Jordan Love will need to be at his best, as he's entering a crucial season with the Packers. For now, people who want to place bets on the Packers can only do so in person, but the start of the new season will begin in September. Will online apps and outlets be made available by then? That's totally up in the air, but the sooner the tribes can get things finalized, the better.
As soon as online betting is on the table for everyone to participate in, the assumption is that local fans won't waste too much time in getting Packers bets in. They'll of course check the NFL futures betting odds too for updated Super Bowl activity, as the Packers are hoping to get back to the big game. It will be interesting to see if that happens or not, but folks will be set to place wagers on it happening both in person and online soon enough.
Wisconsin's online sports betting bill will get rid of the prediction markets problem
An underrated victory for the state here is that Wisconsin's online sports betting bill will get rid of the prediction markets problem. As you're likely aware, prediction markets have been operating at a federal level, meaning people in each state have been able to access them. This includes states where both in-person and online betting is not legal.
For people in Wisconsin, while there's no legal online sports betting, they've been able to use Kalshi and others for their online needs. This is something that local officials have not been too happy about. With that said, now that legal online sports betting is coming to Wisconsin, the hope and assumption is that people in the state will use those outlets instead of the ones where prediction markets are used.
In all likelihood, people will continue to use the prediction markets until the launch of the new online sports betting options. That's a given. However, this could entice the tribes to roll up their sleeves and get things done sooner rather than later. As mentioned above, the hope is for online betting in Wisconsin to get going by the time the NFL season starts. Should that happen, it'd certainly lead to the prediction markets numbers dwindling for Wisconsin.
