Las Vegas Aces (+100)

Las Vegas Aces maintained its core roster from the 2022 championship-winning team for the extended 2023 season and remained the narrow consensus favorites over New York throughout the year. Despite encountering injuries, Las Vegas elevated their performance during the playoffs, several All-Stars shined alongside A'ja Wilson, who was notably overlooked for the WNBA MVP award.

The team demonstrated the poise and experience of defending champions, benefiting from roster continuity and synchronization. They displayed sharp form in the postseason, maintaining consistent pressure on their opponents.

A'ja Wilson dominated throughout the playoffs, delivering a resounding message following her MVP snub. The team's other stars, comprising multiple MVP candidates, contributed significantly with their two-way brilliance, particularly stepping up in the absence of reigning Finals MVP Chelsea Gray and defensive standout Kiah Stokes before the pivotal Game 4.

The Aces, aiming to become the first team in over two decades to achieve a three-peat, are favored to accomplish this feat. However, they will face the challenge of doing so without the legendary Candace Parker, who retired just before the start of training camp.

They are priced at Evens with many bookmakers but can be found at +100 with Betonline at the time of writing.

New York Liberty (+250)

The Liberty believed they were primed for success a year ago, making key moves by acquiring 2021 MVP Jonquel Jones from Connecticut and signing eventual 2023 MVP Breanna Stewart, securing two of the league's top players.

Once Stewart joined the team, it became clear that the WNBA title race was primarily between two teams. Despite a brief challenge from Connecticut in the semifinals, the anticipated Finals matchup materialized as expected.

In Game 1 of the Finals, the Liberty held a narrow lead at halftime, but Vegas tightened their defense in the second half, limiting New York to just 33 points and securing a comfortable victory. Game 2 saw the Liberty struggle early, being outscored 38-19 in the first quarter and eventually losing by a wide margin of 104-76. Although New York managed to win Game 3, it was evident that the Aces were the stronger team overall, clinching the series in four games.

While the Liberty missed out on signing rumored free-agent target Nneka Ogwumike, the presumed re-signing of Stewart ensured that New York's core remained intact for another shot at the championship.

Liberty are at odds of +250 to win the WNBA championship.

Other Contenders

The Seattle Storm made significant moves by signing former MVP Nneka Ogwumike on February 5, adding to their earlier acquisition of Skylar Diggins-Smith, an All-WNBA First-Team player from 2022. These signings, along with Jewell Loyd's presence (an All-WNBA Second-Team player last season), propelled Seattle's championship odds from a league worst +6,500 to around +900 at several major betting sites.

The Phoenix Mercury are also on the rise after addressing weaknesses from last season. With the additions of Natasha Cloud and former Finals MVP Kahleah Copper to complement Brittney Griner, Phoenix's odds have improved significantly, now sitting around +2,500 after starting as basement-dwellers in free agency.

However, these improvements have come at the expense of other teams. The New York Liberty have experienced only a slight decrease in their odds since the start of free agency. In contrast, the Los Angeles Sparks and Chicago Sky, who lost Nneka Ogwumike and Kahleah Copper, respectively, have seen their odds drop sharply.

One of the most notable shifts in championship odds has been seen with the Washington Mystics. They entered free agency with odds as short as +1,800 but have now fallen to as long as +10000 after losing key players like Natasha Cloud and franchise star Elena Delle Donne.
