2023 Monte-Carlo preview

Monte-Carlo is the first clay-court event of the season and one of the nine Masters 1000 tournaments. It is one of the primary clay court tennis tournaments of the year, before Madrid, Rome and the signature French Open at Roland Garros.

The close proximity to the French Open makes it a highly coveted tournament by players as they look to prepare for the second Grand Slam competition of the year.

Originally played in 1897, the competition joined the open era in tennis in 1969 and has since been a major tournament in the Grand Prix Tour.

It was also previously part of the Rothmans Spring Mediterranean Circuit and the World Championship Tennis circuit, as well as the ATP Championship Series Single Week tournament at various times through the years.

In addition, the tournament has featured as one of the top-tier Grand Prix Super Series competitions in the past.

Now, let's take a look at the top contenders to win this tournament, starting with the current No.1 player in the world, Novak Djokovic.

Novak Djokovic

Novak Djokovic is set to make his comeback on Tuesday at the Monte Carlo Masters tournament. He missed out on major ATP events such as the Australian Open and the "Sunshine Double" because of his COVID-19 vaccine refusal.

Djokovic hold a remarkable 23-7 record at Monte-Carlo, having advanced to the semi-finals or better in his last six appearances. He will be looking to win his third Monte-Carlo title and remind the tennis world what they have been missing.

Although, he is the top-ranked player in the world, he did recently lose to Daniil Medvedev in Dubai. This could be his biggest competition in this tournament.

Nadal and Alcaraz both withdrawing from this tournament presents Djokovic with a golden opportunity to not only win his third title at Monte Carlo but to further distance himself in the ATP rankings.

Daniil Medvedev

Medvedev is playing the best tennis of his life coming off a win at the Miami Open. However it appears that all of his success has come on hard courts.

As talented as Medvedev has been on the hard court, he has not been able to translate that ability to clay court success. He has a career ATP singles record of just 18-23 on clay compared to 245-81 on hard courts and 33-17 on grass courts.

He did make it all the way to the semifinals in 2019 at Monte-Carlo, but this is by far his best surface. I do not like his odds and would not recommend betting on Medvedev until we see some sustained success on clay.

Stefanos Tsitsipas

The reigning champion will aim to secure a third successive win at Monte Carlo, a feat that has not been accomplished since Rafael Nadal's impressive run in 2017.

Tsitsipas will be looking to bounce back from disappointing performances in Miami and Indian Wells.

He didn't advance past the quarterfinals in either tournament and was upset by Jordan Thompson (ATP rank 87) in the round of 64 at Indian Wells.

Tsitsipas to win outright is not a bet I can recommend at this point. I need to see him regain some of that excellence he displayed earlier before I feel comfortable betting on him.

Casper Ruud

Ruud loves to play on clay courts. It is his best surface by far, he's basically the exact opposite of Medvedev. He reached the semifinals in 2021 but it doesn't seem like Ruud still has a way to go, but is making solid progress as he ages.

Due to the rest of the draw I can't recommend betting on Ruud to win the this tournament.

Best Bets For the 2023 Monte-Carlo

There is no way I'm not taking the opportunity to bet on Novak Djokovic. He may be the favorite but this tournament feels like it's his for the taking without Nadal or Alcaraz.
