Dricus Du Plessis vs. Khamzat Chimaev Betting Pick
What an absolute doozy in the main event of UFC 319 when Chimaev challenges Du Plessis for the middleweight title of the world. And get this, the challenger is the betting favorite to win right now as Chimaev is -125 over Du Plessis. But you know what? We’re not betting that moneyline. Why? Because we honestly have no clue who wins it. We’ve gone back and forth on it, and still can’t decide who’s winning. That’s because both fighters have their pros and cons.
Let’s start with Du Plessis (23-2). He’s a UFC fan favorite for his fight style, which consists of swinging punches and kicks wildly. No, seriously, Du Plessis is one of the most non-technical fighters in the UFC. And despite that, he’s run through the middleweight division off the back of his power and insane cardio.
Then we have Chimaev, who is the complete opposite of non-technical. He’s an unbelievable grappler and wrestler with a 14-0 record. Yet… he’s one of the sport's biggest underachievers. Always injured, quick to tire out, and just unpredictable. You never know which version of Chimaev will enter the octagon.
Since we’re stuck on who wins, we’re instead betting the Chimaev-Du Plessis over/under. The consensus seems to be is if Chimaev wins, it’ll have to be early — before he tires out. At the same time, most seem to believe Du Plessis has the advantage if he can hang in there and let his cardio take over. Honestly, it’s a simple analysis, but it probably makes sense.
Our instinct tells us to bet the over. Not because we think Du Plessis is necessarily winning, but we just think Chimaev can hang in there at least three rounds, win or lose. He is the more skilled fighter of the two, and we expect him to wear Du Plessis down with his wrestling — not necessarily submit him right away.
Lerone Murphy vs. Aaron Pico Betting Pick
This is the co-main event, and it’s one of the least-known bouts you’ll get in a pay-per-view spot. We’d venture to guess most of you reading have never heard of Pico (13-4), yet he’s the betting favorite over an undefeated Murphy (16-0). Here’s the Murphy-Pico moneyline odds at the best UFC betting sites:
Pico is making his featherweight debut with UFC after a long career in Bellator. Here’s what you need to know about him: he’s one of the most well-rounded fighters in this division. His specialty is wrestling. Pico was a near Olympian at the sport to give you an idea of how much he can go. Not only that, but Pico is a smooth boxer too.
Dana White is throwing Pico into the wolves against the undefeated Murphy. He’s been in the UFC for six years and remains undefeated. Murphy is a striker, however, don’t think he’s a KO specialist. Not at all. Murphy is more of a jab-jab type of puncher, but it’s effective. He lands a lot of punches, and knows how to counter 'em too.
Honestly, we’re fully buying into the Pico hype. Bettors might look at his four-loss career and not think much of him. Here’s the caveat: three of the losses came in his first seven fights. Believe me, he’s not that guy anymore (his other career loss was due to injury too). We get Bellator fighters don’t have much recent success once jumping over to UFC, but Pico will buck that trend. Take him to win!
Jared Cannonier vs. Michael “Venom” Page Betting Pick
This is going to be a fun fight. Both these guys are old gunslingers — a combined age of 79 years old. As it stands, the Cannonier-Page odds are practically a toss-up. Check it out:
We’ll be upfront and say Page is our pick to win. He’s three years younger and much longer (four inches in height and reach advantage). But more than the physical advantage, we must think Page matches well against Cannonier.
Page is an all-out striker, and always has been. The thing is, he’s 38 now so that’s not as effective against a younger opponent who can dodge his strikes. Cannonier, though, he’s far from that and near the end of his career. We see Cannonier getting pieced up in this one. If not a knockout, then Page just wins on the points from his barrage of blows.
