The two horses likely to be shortest in the market are Dance to the Music and Deep Learning. Dance to the Music is the only group-level stakes winner, but Charlie Appleby failed at odds-on last year and with enough other credible runners she looks to be underlaid.
However, Deep Learning must be respected. She is the only horse coming into this two-turn race with two-turn experience. She won a maiden special weight at Saratoga going 1 1/16 miles, and though she has the far outside post, outside posts actually fare quite well on the Woodbine inner turf.
Natalma Stakes Best Bet
Dixie Law is the best bet in the Natalma Stakes. Coming out for solid Woodbine connections who are not as well known by the national and international bettors who will be playing the race, she will be a very playable price. And, her debut was a good one: she tracked the pace and cleared away late, the kind of trip that could work out very well in this race, where horses probably do not want to drop too far back.
The extra distance is also a major plus. She is bred to go this mile and even longer, jockey Rafael Hernandez does his best work going long on grass, and trainer Dale Desruisseaux shines at a price when stretching horses out for the first time.
Natalma Stakes Exotics Horses
The old adage is that pace makes the race, and this race could play kindly to forwardly-placed horses. Pina Colada started poorly on debut, but improved sharply when she was able to show early pace under Sahin Civaci last out. She was pipped right at the post, but fought late for her placing, suggesting she can set the pace and dig in late for a piece of the action again this time for Mark Casse, the trainer with more Natalma wins than anyone.
Another who can get a good forward trip is Hot Mash, who stretches out after a decisive win in a turf sprint at Ellis in stalk-and-pounce fashion last month. The pedigree appears for the stretch out – her half-sister Peace and War was a two-turn Grade 1 winner as a juvenile – and she can show tactical speed. Corsia Veloce has to deal with a rail draw, but she took a strong step forward when switching to turf last out and is another who is tactical enough to get a good trip.
