Breeders' Cup 2016 Filly and Mare Races

Breeders Cup Filly And Mare Turf 2016

Lady Eli

Lady Eli overcame insurmountable odds to live through an accident last summer in which she stepped on a nail and developed laminitis.

That she has returned to the top levels of racing and is winning is nothing short of remarkable. She made her second start off of the bench a winning one in the Flower Bowl last time out and you have to think that the masterful Chad Brown did not have her cranked to full throttle knowing that this race, her third start of the form cycle, is the big one.

She is by far the best domestic turf horse and should be able to handle the Europeans as well. Seventh Heaven may be the most formidable of the European contenders, particularly if you judge her by the company she has been keeping all year.

She defeated Found, one of the likely favorites in the Turf and, though her last race was average, she should rebound. What do you do with Catch a Glimpse?

Like Lady Eli, she won the Juvenile Fillies Turf and until her last race looked to be having a very strong sophomore season. Everyone is allowed one bad day and if she can bounce back from that race at Keeneland she could be an interesting longshot.

Sea Calisi (FR) was no match for her stablemate last time out but jockey intent is worth noting here. It looks like Florent Geroux, rapidly becoming one of the best turf riders in the country, had the choice between this filly and Catch a Glimpse and he went with her.

The Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf is on Saturday, November 5 from Santa Anita. Post time is 3:45 p.m. EST.

Selections:

1) #8 Lady Eli

2) #3 Seventh Heaven

3) #2 Catch a Glimpse

4) #1 Sea Calisi (FR)

Breeders Cup Filly and Mare Sprint 2016

Tara's Tango is an interesting filly in a race without a clear cut standout. She is cutting back in distance and, while she has been proficient and competitive around two turns, she is also a talented sprinter. The most appealing thing about her is the class relief she will be getting - she has been knocking heads with Beholder and Stellar Wind in her recent starts. She is also a horse for the course at Santa Anita.

Carina Mia is another filly who has been keeping exceptional company this year, most notably the sensational Songbird. She is a three-year-old taking on older rivals here but if she can move forward off of her last race, she has hinted that she is a very talented horse in her own right.

Haveyougoneaway has proven herself to be the best filly sprinter on the East Coast and has five wins from seven outings this year. She is coming in fresh since her last race and has been training strongly.

Wavell Avenue is the defending upset champion from this race last year. Her form has not been as good this season, but she could pop up and surprise for one of the hottest barns in the country. She made an encouraging step in the right direction last time out and might be set to peak at the right time.

The Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint is on Saturday, November 5 from Santa Anita. Post time is 7:01 p.m. EST.

Selections:

1) #3 Tara’s Tango

2) #8 Carina MIa

3) #2 Haveyougotaway

4) #10 Wavell Avenue
