Updated Premier Lacrosse League Futures; No reasons to lose the faith in Whipsnakes and Archers

The 2023 Premier Lacrosse League season is now underway, and with a mini-break in proceedings taking place, we thought it a good time to check in on the action and take a closer look at the updated Lacrosse futures betting.

  • The 2023 PLL season started on June 2nd and runs until August 26th. On September 4th the playoffs begin, with the final taking place on September 24th
  • The defending champions are the Waterdogs. They defeated the Chaos Lacrosse Club 11-9 in last year’s Championship match
  • The Waterdogs started this year as third favorites at +500, putting them behind the Whipsnakes (+450) and Atlas (+475) in the betting odds

In the 2023 PLL all sides have played three matches each, and that has given us more insight into who is more likely to challenge for the title in the 2023 postseason.

So far, no team has remained unbeaten. This is largely down to the fact that most of the sides are very evenly matched. As a result, nearly every side has a chance of topping the table or winning the Championship final.

At the start of the season, the top six sides were all at odds of between +450 and +650 to win the competition. Only Redwoods and Cannons were regarded as outsiders, both priced up at +1000.

But after three matches, that has dramatically changed.

Big movers in the betting

Yes, big movers in the betting are Redwoods. They started the 2023 season at +1000. But after two opening wins over the Atlas Lacrosse Club and the Waterdogs, Redwoods has seen their odds halved (+500) and are now right in the mix with the betting favorites.

What Redwoods has done is turned it into a seven-team competition. Only Cannons are now regarded as outsiders by the best online Lacrosse betting sites. Brian Holman’s team is now out from +1000 to +1400. This, despite not having the worst record in the standings.

One word of caution for anybody looking to jump on Redwoods at +500. They weren’t fancied at the start of the season for good reasons. And in their last match, they were taken apart by Whipsnakes (18-11).

Could it be the case that Holman’s team over-achieved in their opening two fixtures? And what we have since seen was a leveling off against the betting favorites? A wait-and-see approach may be advisable here.

The betting favorites

As mentioned, the Whipsnakes defeated Redwoods 18-11 in their last outing. That was the first win of the 2023 PLL for Jim Stagnitta’s team, and it was a much-needed victory.

Despite losing their opening two matches, Whipsnakes are still the favorites with the best online betting sites to win the competition again in 2023. The two-time championship winners started the season as the +450 betting favorites, and that is where they still are.

This is mainly down to their impressive 9-1 regular-season record in 2022, along with some good additions to the squad in the off-season.

The losses were close as well. In their opening match, they went down by just 1 point to Chrome (12-11). And in their second fixture, they again only lost by a single point, again by a 12-11 scoreline, but this time to Atlas.

And Mike Pressler’s Atlas team is also on the same odds they started the season on. Led by 2022 MVP Trevor Baptiste, Atlas is still +475 to win the 2023 Championship.

As well as being captained by Baptiste, Atlas also picked up Gavin Adler and Brett Makar in the 2023 Draft. This gave Pressler’s team the first and third overall picks, and he used them wisely, shoring up his side defensively.

The early leaders

The early season table toppers are the 2022 losing finalists, Chaos. With the best shots against record in the table (31), Chaos sit on top of the table thanks to their superior shots difference. They started the season as fifth favorites at +550, but after winning two of their opening three matches, they are now joint third favorites at +500 (alongside Redwoods).

In total, four teams sit at the top end of the table with a win percentage of .666. They are Chaos (+500), Archers (+525), Waterdogs (+650), and Redwoods (+500). Interestingly, the two favorites, Whipsnakes and Atlas, sit outside the top four after both losing two of their opening three matches.

Our picks

At the start of the season, we picked Archers and Whipsnakes to win. So, how are they doing?

Archers have started impressively, winning two of three. On the opening weekend, they defeated Cannons 16-13, and they followed that up with an impressive 12-7 win over Chrome.

Okay, they were brought down to earth with a bump in their third match, losing 15-10 to Chaos. But with the competitive nature of this competition, we all know that all the sides are likely to beat each other.

We’ve also seen that Whipsnakes still possess the quality to win the competition. Their 18-11 demolition of Redwoods in week three has proven that.

So, as things stand, Archers are coming along nicely, and we expect to see Whipsnakes step on the gas over the next few weeks. So we’re happy to stick with our original Lacrosse betting picks for now.
