2023 Tour De Flanders Preview

As we preview the 2023 Tour de Flanders, we have to start with the change in the course, well sort of. It's more like a return to a previous way of doing things. You see, from 2017 to 2022, the race began in Antwerp. However, that is no more. Instead, it'll be going off at Bruges/Brugge. The UNESCO World Heritage Site was the usual starting point from 1998 to 2016 for those that remember. Though, it's worth remembering many of the cyclists competing today were not around back then seven years ago.

Of course, the new starting-off point changes things at a deeper level. The first 136 kilometers (84.5 miles for those Americans reading) will be a tune-up before the first ascent of the classic Oude Kwaremount. There's only one cobbled sector early on (compared to two last year) so competitor's legs might stay fresh a bit longer with this change.

Still, the loop around Oudenaarde is where this race is won and last, as it always is. There are a whopping 18 climbs from the first ascent of Oude Kwaremount to the finish line so riders will be tested time and time again. In total, the riders will need to climb 3,227 meters on this course from start to finish.

Best Bets To Win 2023 Tour De Flanders

You saw the betting odds above, didn't you? It's really a three-way race between the usual suspects — van Aert, van der Poel, and Pogacar. Given their current lines, you can safely bet on two of them to win the 2023 Tour De Flanders without eating all your profits. That's our approach to this year's race and we're prioritizing bets on these two:

Mathieu van der Poel

If we were forced to make a single bet on this, it would undoubtedly go to Van der Poel. More than anything else, he's "been there, done that" more than his competitors at this event. Van der Poel is a two-time winner (2022 and 2021), plus finished runner-up in 2021. Not only has he dominated here the past three years, but he's had similar domination in the past three races of 2023, finishing in the podium each time (including a win at Milano-San Remo). All the momentum is with Van der Poel going into Sunday, and you'd be crazy not to throw money on him.

Wout van Aert

This is a home race for the Belgium-born Van Aert. He's never won here, though, but he's been mighty close (second place in 2020). He caught COVID last year, which forced him out, but he enters this weekend at full strength and fresh off a runner-up finish at Gent-Wevelgem. Team Jumbo-Visma is off to a fiery 2023, not just with Van Aert, but also with Tiesj Benoot and Christophe Laporte, but make no mistake, the leader remains Van Aert. The team's strength could propel Van Aert to his first win at this competition.

Obviously, we're forgoing a bet on Pogacar and before you ask, we'll explain right now: the Slovenian phenom is actually inexperienced at this event. Last year was his first go in De Ronde, and he had a so-so performance (by his standards), missing the podium barely at fourth. Look, Pogacar is obviously one of the world's best but his inexperience at this monument gives us pause in betting on him compared to the other two.
