Since legal sports betting was brought back in Florida, we've seen nothing but great success in terms of the revenue and handle. However, a concern that keeps on coming up for The Seminole Tribe and Governor Ron DeSantis is that prediction markets keep finding loopholes to operate within the state. With that said, it's no question that those prediction markets continue to raise sports betting issues in Florida, which DeSantis wants squared away as soon as possible.
In this particular case, and it shouldn't be a surprise to many, the outlet Kalshi is the one that's giving Florida a bit of a headache. Kalshi has been in operation in countless states, finding a way to keep staying active despite things being a bit unclear on how it's legal. Several states are pushing back a bit, which is why DeSantis and his team are hoping to get things figured out soon, as it's indeed causing a bit of a problem for The Seminole Tribe's current operation in the Sunshine State.
“In Florida, we kind of have a unique relationship with the Seminole Tribe of Florida," DeSantis said recently on CNBC. "There was things done long before I was Governor to give them exclusive rights over gaming. They also have the exclusive rights over sports betting. And so the question is: Is something like Kalshi, is that clashing with the laws of the state of Florida? Or is it separate? It’s more of a prediction (market). So we’re kind of trying to get our mind around that.”
As you can see from what DeSantis said in his statement above, it's clear that The Seminole Tribe is the one that runs the show interns of both in-person and online sports betting throughout the state. However, with Kalshi's app gaining steam in recent months, it's causing for a bit of a mix-up here. DeSantis wants the tribes to be in sole possession of the betting market, which is why he's hoping more clarity can arrive soon.

The Seminole Tribe and Florida reached an agreement on a 30-year pact
Arguably the main reason that DeSantis wants to make sure no outside markets mess things up here is because The Seminole Tribe and Florida reached an agreement on a 30-year pact several years ago. As soon as this was revealed, it was also projected that it would lead to billions of dollars for the state moving forward, which of course exactly what DeSantis and local officials were going to be hoping for.
With the way things are set, The Seminole Tribe controls the in-person and online betting. There are only a handful of in-person authorized sportsbooks, but the online betting app, which is set through the Hard Rock app, is controlled by the tribe and it's available to everyone within state lines. Now that Kalshi is around, though, it's offering other kinds of betting options that DeSantis and Co. are not a fan of.
In terms of the local sportsbooks that we work with, it's important to keep in mind that whether it's NBA betting, NFL betting or anything else for that matter, there are always some pretty spectacular bonus codes and promotions for you to take a look at. These serve as extra incentive for people who may be on the fence about placing sports wagers, as the sign-up bonuses are once in particular that are pretty darn eye-opening.
As for the pact between Florida and The Seminole Tribe, it has been locked in and nothing is going to change there. Kalshi continues to impact the local betting market, but could things end up with Florida putting a potential ban on things the way other states have attempted to do? That remains to be unclear, but there's no question that DeSantis and his team are going to keep looking into things to see what the best outcome will be.
MLB betting is expected to take off in Florida with the season here
Looking at things as a whole, the recent buzz has been that MLB betting is expected to take off in Florida with the new season here. That's right, the new Major League Baseball season got started last month and already some contenders are starting to emerge. In Florida in particular, the Miami Marlins and Tampa Bay Rays are always going to have a big following.
Both teams are hoping to make a splash this season, which is why baseball fans are checking their MLB betting odds on a consistent basis. While neither the Rays or Marlins have great World Series betting odds of this writing, you never know what might happen later this season. Could some surprises be on the way?
Regardless of if that happens or not, The Seminole Tribe is expected to bring in plenty of in-person and online MLB bets. On top of that, with the NBA postseason sneaking up on us too, you better believe that plenty of wagers are going to be placed on the hardwood as well. All in all, Florida betting news has been booming and things continue to move at a positive pace.
