Division Leader She Feels Pretty can shine once more

The best older turf fillies and mares in the country clash Saturday, July 12 in the $500,000 Diana Stakes (G1) at Saratoga. The 1 ⅛-mile grass race, open to female horses aged four and older, is a perennial showcase of the best middle-distance turf mares in the country, and sometimes even from abroad. Horses who run well often go on to run well in other major races in the division, including the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf.

The race drew some of the leading lights in the turf division – in fact, every runner competed in Grade 1 company last out. The leader is She Feels Pretty, who rides a four-win streak into the race. However, she’ll face a tough field including Just a Game (G1) winner Dynamic Pricing, Pegasus Filly and Mare Turf (G2) winner Be Your Best, and more.

Diana Stakes Handicapping

Now that you have looked at the options and made your account at the best online sportsbook for you, it is time to get to know the Diana Stakes field. Here are the top contenders in the Diana:

Diana Stakes Favorites

She Feels Pretty has emerged as the top horse in the older filly and mare turf division. She has won four straight, and her two starts this year prove she has trained on to fit with older runners, not just sophomores. She has the tactical speed to get a trip in this race without a ton of early speed, and the 1 1/8-mile distance fits her well.

There is some rain possible for Saturday, but if that happens, her last-out win in the New York Stakes (G1) shows she can tough it out. It wasn't her favorite footing, but the good horses just win and she proved she is just that good.

The most interesting alternative is Excellent Truth. Though she was beaten by stablemate Dynamic Pricing last out, the more reasonable pace will help her this time. She can handle any kind of turf; if it rains, she is the uncommon European transfer who actually does well on rain-affected turf.

Diana Stakes Exotic Chances

Be Your Best is interesting from a pace perspective. Her class is the question, as she has tables to turn on several of these from the Jenny Wiley. But, she didn't make the top that day, and this time she figures to do so. If she can set a slow enough pace under Irad Ortiz - and it doesn't rain too much - she might have just enough left when the real running begins to see it through.

As for who else to use for exotics, that is ground-dependent. Choisya is interesting if the course stays firm, since she has tactical speed and good form through several of these from Keeneland. However, she is ground-dependent and needs something firm, good at the softest.

If the ground gets softer, round out exotics with Dynamic Pricing, She won't get the pace she got in the Just a Game, but she always seems to bring her best over rain-affected ground, so she should be good enough to make a credible late charge.
