The Haskell Stakes (G1) happens Saturday, July 19 at Monmouth Park! The $1 million race covers 1 ⅛ miles on the dirt, and it is the first major summer race for three-year-old main-track horses in the summer. Some of the sport’s greats have won this race: American Pharoah, Holy Bull, Rachel Alexandra, Serena’s Song, and more.
The Haskell drew a field of eight led by Preakness Stakes winner Journalism, who makes his first start since finishing second in the Belmont Stakes. Burnham Square, Gosger, and Goal Oriented also made appearances during the Triple Crown series, and four other foes will try to show that they belong with the upper echelon of sophomores.
With such a classy field and history, the Haskell is one of the best horse racing betting opportunities of the summer. Keep reading to find out the best sites for betting the Haskell Stakes online, and the best horses to play in the race!

Haskell Stakes Handicapping
You have your wagering account set up, so now it is time to start handicapping the race. These are the top contenders for the 2025 Haskell Stakes:
Haskell Stakes Win Contenders
Journalism is the best-proven horse coming into the Haskell, and he is the horse to beat. He has never finished off the board, and he is versatile enough to settle off of the likely hot pace in this race, or to come from a little closer up if the track is playing a little more friendly toward horses who sit forward.
Trainer Michael McCarthy is as shrewd as anyone with placing horses, and when he presses forth with a taxing campaign there is usually good reason. Journalism is the class of the field, he can run his race from anywhere, and he should take beating.
Another horse who stands to benefit from all the early speed drawn into the Haskell is Burnham Square. He had to chase down lone speed in a four-horse field over a shorter trip last time in the Matt Winn (G3). But, this time, he’ll get a lively pace to close into, and he stretches out to 1 ⅛ miles, the same distance at which he is a Grade 1 winner. It’s also a big deal that Brian Hernandez, Jr. keeps the faith to ride, since he was also the regular rider for Take Charge Milady in the CCA Oaks at Saratoga, but comes here instead.
Haskell Stakes Exotics Picks
Gosger makes his first start since finishing second in the Preakness behind Journalism. He has a lot of early speed, which could get hot with several speed horses in the field, but Gosget is tactical enough to sit just off the pace. If Monmouth is playing well for frontrunners, a distinct possibility, Gosger moves up. And, no matter what, this distance should suit him beautifully.
Among the horses who did not run in Triple Crown races, Kentucky Outlaw is the most interesting. He is another who stands to be near the front end – but he proved two back when winning the Long Branch over the local course that he has a stalking gear. These are the toughest foes he has faced yet, but if Florent Geroux can give him a stalk-and-pounce trip, he can get a piece of the exotics.
