2024 Stanley Cup futures

The 2023 Stanley Cup Finals are now all done, with the Vegas Golden Knights crowned champions for the first time in their history. That means it's a perfect time to look ahead to 2024 and examine who could be in contention to lift Lord Stanley next year. Surprisingly enough, Vegas isn't one of the frontrunners to repeat, but they are in the top five. Leading the way in the sportsbooks is the 2022 champs, the Colorado Avalanche, who sit at +800 odds. Following them are the Carolina Hurricanes (+900), Edmonton Oilers (+900), New Jersey Devils (+900), and the Golden Knights (+1000). As you can see, the Florida Panthers are nowhere to be found despite their Cinderella run. Keep reading for the 2024 Stanley Cup futures.

Colorado Avalanche (+800)

The Avs failed to live up to expectations in the 2022 playoffs, losing in the first round to the Seattle Kraken. In fairness though, it was an injury-riddled season for Colorado, who didn't have Gabriel Landeskog all year while numerous other key figures dealt with health issues, too. Regardless, you can't really ignore them when they have players like Mikko Rantanen, Cale Makar, and Nathan MacKinnon. But, Landeskog is out for all of 2023-24 due to injury again, which is a major blow. Val Nichuskin meanwhile has a murky future after some off-ice problems. Although the Avalanche weren't so busy in NHL free agency, this is still a group with major talent and no shortage of experience. Don't count Jared Bednar's team out for a Cup run next year.

Edmonton Oilers (+900)

Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl. Need I say more? You're looking at potentially the two best players in the NHL and the top for sure in McDavid, who racked up a ridiculous 153 points in 2022-23. Guess who was second in the league? Draisaitl, with 128. Anything is possible with these two at the helm, but it's been years and years of just falling short for Edmonton, who were knocked out in the conference semis by Vegas this year. Defense and goaltending always seem to be an issue for the Oilers, not offense. They've yet to address the need in between the posts but if they can find a solid piece to come in and contribute, it will help their Stanley Cup chances a ton.

Carolina Hurricanes (+900)

The Canes finished as runners-up in the Eastern Conference in the regular season and despite losing one of their best players in Andrei Svechnikov to a torn ACL prior to the playoffs, they still made some noise. Carolina was in the conference finals but lost to the Florida Panthers in embarrassing fashion. Nevertheless, the future does look bright for the Hurricanes, who bring back a similar roster and even added some very intriguing names in free agency. Michael Bunting and Dmitry Orlov are joining Carolina, while Vladimir Tarasenko is rumored to be on their radar, too.

Toronto Maple Leafs (+1200)

The Leafs finally ended their playoff curse by winning their first-round series against the Tampa Bay Lightning but the Panthers quickly dusted them in the second round in five games. That left a ton of disappointment in Toronto because this squad truly had Stanley Cup aspirations. 2023-24 won't be any different. The question is, does the core stay together? Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner, William Nylander, and John Tavares have yet to take the Maple Leafs to the Promised Land. It wouldn't be a surprise to see one of them moves this summer, but it probably won't be Matthews or Nylander. There's a new GM in town after Kyle Dubas was let go, so we can expect some changes. They've already signed a few grinders in Tyler Bertuzzi, Max Domi, and Ryan Reaves.

Vegas Golden Knights (+1000)

The Golden Knights were easily the best team all postseason and they proved it in the Stanley Cup, disposing of Florida rather easily. You simply can't count out Vegas, who brings back a wonderful core of Mark Stone, Jonathan Marchessault, Jack Eichel, and Chandler Stephenson. The only player thus far who left is Reilly Smith but that was necessary so they could re-sign Ivan Barbashev. Don't sleep on the champs.

Boston Bruins (+1600)

Since the Bruins did win the President's Trophy, they're worth mentioning. However, Boston collapsed in the opening round of the playoffs, choking away a 3-1 lead against the Florida Panthers. The roster is about to look a lot different next season, too. Orlov, Bertuzzi, and Taylor Hall are gone, while Patrice Bergeron and David Krejci may retire. The Bruins will be worse in 2023-24. I think last season was their best chance at lifting Lord Stanley.

Picks

Right now, it's best to put money down on a few different teams in the 2024 Stanley Cup futures because it's so early. In my opinion, the Hurricanes and Golden Knights are the best bets.
