With the 2023-24 NHL season quickly approaching, it's the perfect time to look at some futures. While most sports bettors put money down on the eventual Stanley Cup winner, there's also a plethora of awards that could fetch you a nice profit next year. For example, the Hart Trophy. Also known as the NHL MVP, Connor McDavid is the reigning winner and has captured the prestigious honor three times since coming into the league. He's a heavy favorite to win it once again with -150 odds. Following him are Nathan MacKinnon (+900), David Pastrnak (+1200), and Matthew Tkachuk (+1400), while Leon Draisaitl and Auston Matthews also sit at +1400 odds. Connor McDavid (-150)
At most sportsbooks, McDavid has negative odds to win his third Hart Trophy in the last four years. That's extremely impressive. But let's be honest, the Edmonton Oilers superstar is hands down the best hockey player in the world and it's not even a question. McDavid broke a bunch of records in 2022-23 and finished the campaign with an NHL-best 64 goals, 89 assists, and 153 points. In other words, McDavid is truly unstoppable. Whether the Oilers make the Stanley Cup or not, McDavid is going to show out. It's hard to imagine anyone beating him out for his fourth career Hart Trophy. He'd be the first back-to-back winner since Alexander Ovechkin in 2008 and 2009.
Nathan MacKinnon (+900)
MacKinnon has never been named a Hart Trophy winner but he's definitely one to watch. The Colorado Avalanche standout was key to his team's Stanley Cup title in 2021-22 and had quite the year last season, too. MacKinnon finished with 42 goals and 69 assists in 71 games for 111 points. As a goal-scorer and a playmaker, MacKinnon is nasty.
Leon Draisaitl (+1400)
There's an argument to be had that Draisaitl, McDavid's teammate, is the second-best player in the NHL. He's been right on McDavid's tail in goals over the last three seasons and did win a Hart Trophy in 2019-20. In 2022-23, the German had 52 goals and 76 assists for 128 points. That was second in the league behind only McDavid. Draisaitl always plays heavy minutes and has proven to be extremely reliable for Edmonton. Also, if McDavid does miss any time, Draisaitl is the type of player who can step up and be the main man. He's that talented. Could be worth a bet here. It's not like he hasn't won the Hart Trophy before. At the very least, Draisaitl and McDavid will be one-two in points.
David Pastrnak (+1200)
The Boston Bruins are expected to take a significant step back after last year's epic playoff collapse. But that doesn't mean David Pastrnak will. The Czech was a finalist for the Hart Trophy after a breathtaking campaign where he led the Presidents' Trophy winners with 61 goals and 52 assists in 82 contests. Even if the Bruins aren't as good this season, there's no reason Pastrnak can't be a force again. He has no shortage of motivation after signing an eight-year, $90 million extension in March that will keep him in Beantown until 2031.
Auston Matthews (+1400)
How can we ignore Auston Matthews? While he does play on a star-studded Toronto Maple Leafs team, Matthews did win the Hart Trophy in 2021-22, edging out McDavid. Matthews is considered in some circles as a top-three player in the NHL. But, he wasn't as dominant last season, finishing with 85 points (40 goals and 45 assists) in 74 contests. That was a far cry from his 106 points in 2021-22. That being said, Matthews did just sign a four-year extension that makes him the highest-paid player in the league.
Nikita Kucherov (+1800)
Nikita Kucherov is the backbone of the Tampa Bay Lightning franchise. And while they fell short of another Stanley Cup run in 2022-23, the Russian had quite the year. He put up 113 points in 82 games, scoring 30 goals and supplying 83 assists. There is no question Kucherov is the go-to man for the Lightning offense and it wouldn't surprise me to see him easily surpass the 100-point mark again. Will it be enough to stick with McDavid or Draisaitl? Only time will tell.
Hart Trophy Futures
I'm not going to sway too far from the favorites. There isn't a whole lot of value in McDavid's odds but I'd put money on him. Also, take Draisaitl, who could very well win the Hart Trophy as well. +1400 is worth it.
