Stars Favored to Beat Red Wings in Intriguing Tuesday Night Matchup
  • What: Dallas Stars vs Detroit Red Wings
  • When: Tuesday, January 23rd
  • Where: Little Caesars Arena

The Dallas Stars will finish up a four-game road trip on Tuesday evening when they visit the Detroit Red Wings for an intriguing cross-conference matchup at Little Caesars Arena. The puck is scheduled to drop at 7 PM EST. Dallas is coming off a tough OT loss to the New York Islanders on Sunday but overall, they've been playing well. The Red Wings on the other hand just beat the Tampa Bay Lightning by a score of 2-1 and continue to be one of the more surprising teams in the NHL. This should be an entertaining matchup between a pair of teams who don't face off too often. Continue reading for the Stars vs Red Wings picks.

Detroit Red Wings+127+127+125

The Stars are a clear -143 favorite for an implied win probability of 58.85%. The Red Wings return at +127 and have a 44.05% chance of taking this one on home ice. The total is set at 6.5 goals. Dallas has won six meetings in a row with Detroit, outscoring them 12-4 across the last two. Something to keep an eye on if you're betting on this contest.

Dallas Having a Nice Season

The Stars were on the verge of a Stanley Cup last season and in 2023-24, it looks like they will be a contender again. Dallas is third in the Central Division with a 27-13-6 record, only sitting behind the Colorado Avalanche and the Winnipeg Jets by a mere three and four points, respectively. The Stars are a solid team all around, but they especially thrive offensively. Dallas is third in goaks scored, second in shooting percentage, and fifth in faceoff percentage.

There is a really nice core for this squad. Jason Robertson leads the way with 48 points, while Roope Hintz, Joe Pavelski, and Matt Duchene all have over 40 points apiece as well. It's extremely difficult to find a team with this many guys who are putting up points on a nightly basis. Hintz's 20 goals are a team-best, while Robertson's 32 assists are a team-best, too. In fact, 11 different players have notched a minimum of 20 points. Balance.

The Isles did keep the Stars at bay over the weekend, though. Dallas went down 1-0 in the first period before scoring a pair in the second. New York ultimately tied things up in the third before winning it in overtime thanks to Bo Horvat. The Stars are 5-3-2 in their last 10 outings and will return home for two games after visiting Detroit. Dallas does play well on the road, however, compiling a 13-5-4 record.

Red Wings Surprising Everyone

Aside from the Vancouver Canucks, the Red Wings are probably the most pleasant surprise in the league. Detroit owns a 24-17-5 record which is good enough for fourth place in the always competitive Atlantic Division. They're also 7-2-1 in the last 10 games, which means the Wings will be coming into this one hot and with momentum. Defensively, Derek Lalonde's group isn't the greatest. They're allowing 3.28 goals per game which ranks 22nd and over 30 shots per night, which is 26th in the NHL. But, their offense has made up for it and is an integral reason Detroit is in the playoff mix.

The Red Wings are sixth in goals scored and just like Dallas, they have a great core of players who can get it done. Dylan Larkin is the star of the show with 41 points, while teammate Alex DeBrincat also has 40 points. The likes of Lucas Raymond, Daniel Sprong, and Shane Gostisbehere are all contributing at a high level, too.

Detroit is 4-1 in their previous five games and just took down a talented Lightning team on Sunday. Victor Hedman opened the scoring but Raymond equalized before Daniel Sprong scored the winner in the second period. The Red Wings outshot the Bolts 35-28. In net, Alex Lyon made 27 saves on 28 shots. The Red Wings have compiled a 12-7-4 record at Little Caesars Arena but definitely struggle against the Stars, who have dominated them in recent memory as you saw above. Regardless, Detroit is playing good hockey and should be confident.

Stars vs Red Wings Picks

It's difficult to look past the Stars' track record against the Red Wings. For that reason alone, I'm riding the Dallas moneyline for Tuesday's affair in Motown.
