OSB World Cup Quarter Finals Betting Briefing
The Round of 16 delivered a shock or two, as well as some tricky moments for the big teams, but we are now at the quarter final stage of the Women’s World Cup. The four quarter-finals will be staged on August 11 and August 12, with the first two taking place in New Zealand and the latter pair in Australia.
The USA being knocked out of the tournament after losing on penalties to Sweden was the biggest shock of the competition so far. Tournament favorites England also had a tough time, as it was held to 0-0 by Nigeria after extra time, but ultimately prevailed in a penalty shootout thanks to the greater experience of the England players.
The result is the top half of the World Cup is much more open, with Spain taking on Netherlands and Japan playing against Sweden. In the bottom half, England will take on Colombia while France faces the challenge of the host nation Australia in front of a passionate home crowd in Brisbane.
OSB World Cup Quarter Finals Favorites
There are three teams available at odds less than +500, led by England as tournament favorite. It is difficult to argue with that, based on results, although not performances. The favorite beat China impressively in its final Group game, but the two narrow victories England had prior to that did not impress, and at the end of the Round of 16 match against Nigeria, England was on the ropes, before eventually winning on penalties.
Spain may seem like a decent alternative considering its 5-1 victory over Switzerland in the Round of 16, but it's important to note that Spain has only faced one other high-caliber team thus far and has already given up four goals. That opponent was Japan, a team that it may have to face again in the semi-finals.
So, at the bigger price of the three, it is Japan that is the best pick of the quarter final favorites. It has been very impressive so far, scoring 11 goals without reply in beating Zambia, Costa Rica and Spain, and was the better team throughout when beating Norway 3-1 in the Round of 16. I
Sweden, Japan's quarter-final opponent, had a similarly good Group record but didn't face the same caliber of competition as Japan did. Sweden is probably going to try to use the same defensive strategies it used against the USA, where it only had one shot on target during the entire game, but Japan has the ingenuity and imagination to overcome defensive tactics and looks the best of the favorites.
OSB World Cup Quarter Finals Contenders
Since there are no clear underdogs in this quarterfinals, it would be worthwhile to look at the teams that are offered at higher odds further down in the betting markets.
Australia is one obvious contender. Home advantage can be significant in big games, especially if a team needs a boost at vital moments. Australia had a difficult time getting going during the Group Stage, narrowly defeating Ireland and falling short against Nigeria. However, a 4-0 victory over Canada secured the group title, and it then looked extremely comfortable as it defeated Norway 2-0 to advance to the round of eight.
The Netherlands has also looked solid so far, but it is in the tougher half of the draw, so at bigger odds, there could still be some value in picking Colombia.
The South American team did not impress in its opening three games and it topped the Group despite losing to Morocco in its last game before having to work hard to beat Jamaica 1-0 in the Round of 16.
But Colombia is a dangerous squad, with a front line that can cause any opponent problems. It also has arguably the most exciting player in the world in its ranks in Linda Caicedo, and while it has been defensively focused so far, Colombia has the capacity to score freely if required. As the underdog, it rates as a value pick.
